The Old 97's are one of the most popular bands within the alternative country rock scene, which may be bigger than you'd expect. The band was started in 1993 by singer and guitarist Rhett Miller with bassist Murry Hammond and, later, lead gutarist Ken Bathea and drummer Philip Peeples. The group came out with five (and maybe more by now) albums, each more pop-ish and less country-ish than the last, and, generally, each more acclaimed than the last.
