In March 2005, Brian Stanger found himself wanting to try something new.
After spending some time playing with a group of musicians, and having already named the project "Open Sky Separators", he decided it was time to move on and assemble a fresh batch of musicians. Having no specific master plan in mind.....he just started dialing numbers.
As far as bass players were concerned, he only had to dial one number. Patrick Kelly had been someone who regularly came to see Brian play with the old OSS lineup, and actually bought the first copy of the band's first CD. Although the two musicians didn't previously know one another personally, Stanger was struck by Kelly's enthusiasm for the music and decided to call him first. Ironically, the day Stanger called, Patrick had just turned in a 2 week notice at one of his two bartending jobs to focus more on his music career. Patrick's answer was immediate - "I can do it, I want to do it, I will do it!"
Finding a drummer was a bit trickier. A few people were called, but it wasn't until Patrick had heard that Mike Froedge was available that they found the right guy. Mike's previous band, doubleDrive, had broken up, and he was doing various recording sessions around Atlanta and elsewhere.
Brian had never formally met Mike, and Patrick had only met him in passing one time. Mike had never heard the music before, and initially he was just going be hired to do the record, and then move on. But after a couple of rehearsals, he decided he would become a part of the group. They immediately gave a sigh of relief. Brain and Patrick knew this was the guy for them, and Mike knew he wanted to be a part of this band. The chemistry was instant.
Patrick remembers the first night they jammed together.... Around the third or fourth song, he looked over at Froedge, whose eyes were closed and whose arms were hammering down precisely what need to be there. Then, panning across the room, he saw Stanger ripping out a lead on his guitar, eyes closed and dredlocks swinging. He knew this was it, and he could tell they all felt the same. The NEW Open Sky Separators was born......OSS Version 2.0. :)
In May, they took their shiny new band into Brighter Shade Studios and Lucid Lounge Studios to begin recording a full length CD, with Greg Lee (Acres), Josh Sattler (also from Mike's old band doubleDrive), and Mike handling engineering and some co-production work. The album will be complete by late fall or early winter.
All three members are some of the best and most well-seasoned musicians that Atlanta has to offer. Here's a little history on the individual members.....
* Stanger spent 7 years fronting and playing guitar in his own band, "Big Hate", who released 2 albums for Flip/A&M records, and toured all over the US in support of those records. After that, he covered bass duties for while in another great, but now-defunct Atlanta band called Something Left After Misfortune.
* After a couple of years (and one DJ Hurricane [Beastie Boys] -produced album) with Atlanta funk/rap/rock group "Urban Grind", drummer Mike Froedge spent 7 years in "doubleDrive". They released their first album on MCA records, and a second one in the US and Australia on Roadrunner Records, both of which garnered respectable amounts of radio airplay and critical acclaim, and toured extensively for most of those 7 years.
* Bassist Patrick Kelly has spent over 10 years touring with the eclectic, energetic rock band "The Goodies", who also have released 2 albums and 2 EPs, and the band still has a loyal and growing regional following.
One thing that makes Open Sky Separators so exciting to each member right now is the "newness" of it all.....The fact that the three of them never really knew one another personally before forming, yet the chemistry and vibe was immediate. They had all known of each other's previous bands, and respected each other's talents, but had never expected to end up playing in a great band together. Now they have already recorded a great-sounding album, with more great things on the horizon.....
* MORE RECENT NEWS: Many of you may have already noticed that we've had a 4th person with us recently! Jymi Mullins, former guitarist of Echophlox, the Living Abortions, and numerous other Atlanta bands, has been adding some of his unique noise to our mix at recent shows, and will be recording some new material with the band as well. |
