Biography

Operation Ivy was a Ska-Punk band formed in the late '80's which would later generate a cult following and inspire many third wave ska bands.
Operation Ivy formed in May of 1987 in Berkely, CA. Vocalist Jesse Michaels joined with guitarist/vocalist Lint (Tim Armstrong), bassist Matt McCall better known as Matt Freeman and to finish the rhythm section, drummer Dave Mello. Operation Ivy played a raw punk rock and added saxophone player Paul Bae to give the classic Ska-Punk sound OpIv is so best known for. The newly formed group played shows all over the Bay Area loved by many and loathed by many "true punks" for there integration of Ska. Never the less, OpIv signed on to Lookout! Records and released the single VULNERABILITY that same year. They released the HECTIC e.p. a year later. In 1989, Jesse Michaels broke the group up for a lack in interest in what the punk rock scene had been becoming (?) and because (this is speculation) the group didn't know how to handle the new-found rise in popularity. Just after the brake, both e.p.'s were joined together to form the first full length release entitled ENERGY, this was also put out by Lookout! Records.
Matt Freeman and Tim Armstrong went on to form DOWNFALL which released one album and then later formed RANCID. Jesse Michaels became a monk for 6 months and has recently returned to the music scene with his new band the COMMON RIDERS.

Both Operation Ivy and Rancid are two of the best bands ever, and there isnt really a way to compare them. They each have their two different styles, and they both kick ass.	reelbigpunk22

I agree, what an insanely hard question to answer. Rancid is my favorite band of all time, but do I actually think they are BETTER than Op Ivy? Hmmm, if longevity counts then yes. I wonder what sounds OpIvy would be putting out nowadays if they had stuck it out, but then we wouldn't have Rancid so....I have a theory here though, please tell me what you think. Jesse(of Operation Ivy) much like Fat Mike from NOFX are commentators?!(I think thats the word I want) as in they write songs about whatthey see and think. Which is why OpIvy lyrics are so politically or sociall charged. Tim Armstrong however, is a poet, so the things he writes about come from the heart, and what he feels. Not that JEsse and Fat Mike don't feel what they think, it just comes across different in the lyrics. NOFX and OpIvy(although not similar in the least) both sound as though they are trying to make a point, whereas Rancid sounds like they are expressing what they feel...If that makes sense awesome, if not Im sorry. Nice theory. This is awesome, seeing real fans. I've asked people I (sadly) know who tehy liked better between these two and they always answered either, Rancid by a football field, or "Who is Operation Ivy?" This mad eme really sad =*( . I'm glad to see that even though many of you like Rancid better(hey, I love Rancid) you still think Op. Ivy is a good band. Thank you all, you have brightened my day. Oh, and I like Op. Thing is, only lasting 2 yrs, developing such a tight little scene down in Berkeley, Operation Ivy kinda made themselves ska gods. How would they have treaded over the past 15 yrs if they were still together?	Grifter420
