PAAPA WASTIK
Paapa Wastik is a conscious African Dancehall-Reggae artist. Whose musical talent began around the tender age of five in his hometown of Cape Coast, Ghana where music is a predominant part of his culture. He grew up surrounded by a variety of music and as a child was always singing and beating empty cans as makeshift drums. Through his passion for music he became a self-taught drummer and started drumming at church .
In elementary school he began writing his own lyrics, and in secondary high school he was well known for representing his school in inter-regional school talent shows and musical activities. Due to his popularity he was then invited to almost every regional youth school entertainment as well as other talent shows.Paapa Wastik was also involved in organizing many music and talent shows around the Cape Coast municipalities and became known as one of the top performers in his region.
In addition to local talent shows he was frequently invited to several radio stations to ‘flow on rhythms‘ and to host programs with radio presenters. It was during his school days at Mfantsipim School he wanted to released his first album, but due to academic responsibilities, he postponed his musical pursuits. It was around the same year that his beliefs in RASTAFARI became stronger, so the concept of his music became fully devoted to delivering consciously uplifting and positive messages, with the purpose educating and healing humanity .
In 2002 Paapa Wastik met producer Gabriel Fossati-Bellani, and began effort toward releasing his first album Champion Wastik's "Mama Africa".
The following year the album was released and gained much air play from radio stations across the country, with the music video of his hit song ‘ntomakatadieso“ which speaks as a vivid commentary to the corruption of the system, Achieving popularity and air play on Ghana national television and other West African networks. The album did good within the first year of its release, and continues to move forward with firm faith, positive messages, and more fire!!
Also, within 2003 Paapa Wastik was featured on many albums of various respective Ghanaian artists and gained greater recognition not only in Ghana, but worldwide. It was also at that time he was invited to perform at the annual Panafest an internationally acclaimed Pan-African Festival, which was held in Ghana. Within the same year an international reggae production group called "Greenlion Sounds" teamed up with Paapa Wastik to produce dubplate songs, which were featured on their "Greenlion in Ghana" CD mix.. He also recorded a single hit track called "Onu fe Kill,em" with a fellow Ghanaian based reggae artist Gold-Teeth.
Making progressive steps in his talent and music mission Paapa Wastik brings his talent to the United States whereby he has established an independent record label, Asaase Music Foundation. Playing with several bands and performing at various shows and festivals throughout the country. In 2006 Rommi Records joined forces with Paapa Wastik to work on his latest album “Thanks and Praise“ of which many tracks were recorded at Tuff Gong Studios in Kingston Jamaica, with notable artists like Bongo Herman, Lutan Fyah, and Jah Marcus. Paapa Wastik has shared the stage with Reggae legends like Abyssinians, The Itals, Lucky Dube, Everton Blender, Admiral Tibet, Junior Reid, Winston Jarret, Luciaono, Mickey General, Anthony B, The Marley Family and many more. In 2007 Paapa Wastik was the headliner on the opening night of the Northwest World Reggae Festival in Eugene Oregon.he was also spotted waving the banner on stage for Anthony B and Fantan Mojah with the untouchable band. He performed at the Lafayette Reggae & Cultural Festival in Lafayette Louisiana, Victoria Ska Festival in BC Canada, Arts, Roots and Culture Showcase in Portland Oregon, Olympia Hemp Fest in Olympia, Washington, and many more. This livicated Rastafarian DJ brings pure FIRE every time he touches the mic and is highly skilled in song writing, musicianship, and production. Paapa Wastik has been inspired by musicians like: Charlie Chaplain, Eva Edna Ogoli, Nana Kwame Ampadu, Daddy Lumba, Kojo Antwi, Joseph Hill, Lucky Dube, KK Kabobo,Gyadu Blay Ambulay, Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Sizzla and many others.
