Papa Roach is a nu-metal band formed in Vacaville, North California in
1993. The band, which has been compared to Korn and Limp Bizkit, consist
of Jacoby Shaddix (stage name: Colby Dick, vocals, 1976 Vacaville),
Dave Buckner (Vacaville 1976, drums), Will James (bass), and Jerry
Horton (1975 Vacaville, guitar). The boys were high school buddies. The
band named themselves after Dick’s grandfather (papa) and the insect;
roach. They felt that the roach symbolizes longevity and resilience.
Their debut album entitled Potatoes For Christmas was released on their
own label in 1994. In 1996, roadie Tobin Esperonce (1980 Vacaville)
replaced James. The group then released their second album entitled Old
Friends From Young Years. The album contained a lot of Hip-Hop. In fact,
Dick rapped many of the verses. The group was gaining credibility and
they went on the road becoming the supporting act of bands such as
Suicidal tendencies and Incubus. They soon signed with DreamWorks
Records. On April 25, 2000 their album, Infest was released. The group
then went on the vans Warp Tour. They traveled in both the Unites States
and abroad supporting acts such as Eminem, Limp Bizkit, and Korn. The
album soon went triple platinum and Papa Roach began headlining their
own concert tours. In 2001 then went on the Ozzfest Tour. It was at that
tour that they created and compiled in their bus the new music for
their album entitled lovehatetragedy. The album was released on June 18,
2002. Coby Dick dropped his stage name, and began going by his birth
name; Jacoby Shaddix. The album was produced by Brendan O’Brian (Korn,
Rage Against the Machine, Stone Temple Pilots, and Pearl Jam). The music
of Papa Roach is often compared to Faith No More and Rage Against the
Machine.
