The Paper Airplanes weren't always The Paper Airplanes; in fact, origami was the last thing on their minds. Like any other band, changing names came along with the music. Back and forth through names like Three of a Kind, Jets to Memory, and The Acoustica, the band finally realized that the music is what makes the name and not the other way around.
Passionate Dallas musicians, Hassan & Sumair, started playing guitar in the 10th grade and realized their true potential and ear for music throughout the years. Three of a Kind first started in February of 2005 with Hassan Ali (vocals/guitar), Sumair Merani (lead guitar), Adnan Merchant (drums), and no bass player, as a band performing cover songs for their local church and at various parties. As they improved, original ideas started forming in their heads, so Hassan and Sumair started working more heavily on their own style of music instead of covers. Soon, bassist Shawn Makhani was added to the band's lineup and their name changed to Jets to Memory, but one member's addition caused the loss of another. Due to distance and lack of practice, the band's drummer was soon gone. Without a backbone now, everything came to a halt. Or did it?
An old friend, Faheem Khemani, stepped on to the band's lineup in February of 2006, sporting his 9 years of drumming experience with many other bands, thus, giving a fresh, new sound to who are now The Paper Airplanes. Finally getting the recognition they deserved from various gigs, the band was on their way to the lime light. But the band was still not complete. With the removal of Shawn Makhani, the band was left bass less once again, crushing their hopes and dreams for the future.
Still without a bassist the band pushed on. The current lineup includes two original members, Hassan and Sumair, and drummer Faheem. Using guest bassists at the last few shows the band seemed to impress the crowd everywhere they went. Getting call backs from parties and weekly venues, the band improved immensely and started refining their original work. Armed with a fan base, determination, and clearer musical direction, The Paper Airplanes found their place in the world of music.
They're currently working strenuously to release their first EP, Ready for Take-Off, which is due to be released in the latter part of June. ^_^ Look forward to it! |
