Alecia Beth Moore was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1979. For as far back as she can remember, all she ever wanted to do was sing. She would sing every chance she got - school plays, gospel at church, punk bands at 13. She said: "Any problem I've ever had just fades away when I'm on stage."
When Alecia was only 7 years old, her parents split up, which was the milestone in a life torn apart. Her father, Jim, was a Vietnam Veteren, and her mother, Judy, was an ER nurse - she has a brother, Jason, who is two years older than she is.
The turning point in her "career" came when she was just 16 years old: she was at a club and her friends told her to get up on stage and sing, so she did. The DJ told her that she had a good voice and that if she came back on Friday's he'd give her a guest spot.
Not long after that, she was signed by LA Reid and she was recording her first album, Can't Take Me Home.
The name "P!nk" came about for various reasons. One being that growing up, her and her friend's favorite movie was Resevoir Dogs. The character Mr. Pink in the movie is a wise-ass and all of Alecia's friends agreed that she was Mr. Pink... The name stuck. (However LA and her decided that they should drop the "Mr." because it was likely to confuse people!) She now even has a tattoo that says "Mr. Pink" - it's on her inner left thigh. (She has over 20 tattoos all together!)
After her first album was such a success, P!nk recorded her second album, M!ssundaztood. She felt that her first record didn't portray who she really was so she went against what everyone told her to do, and she created M!ssundaztood. The entire album is a realistic portrayal of her life. Brutal, honest, painful, but very real. Very truthful. After that album was released she had finally made a name for herself. P!nk is quoted as saying: "The feedback that I got from listeners and from music lovers was, like, 'thank you for helping me not commit suicide', 'thank you for not being skinny', and to me, that's bigger than music. I don't care what anyone says about me. I always thought there was a reason for the pain, there was a reason for the experience, there was a reason for everything. And here it is: this is my reason. This is my mission." Her dream was fullfilled with M!ssundaztood. She was making music for the reasons she always wanted to: to get herself heard, to tell the truth. She said: "When I made M!ssundaztood, it was like 'yes, finally I will be heard.'" She's also quoted as saying: "I accept the challenge that kids are going to be relating to me moreso than to a lot of other people because I am telling the truth, and I have been there."
In November of 2003, P!nk released her third album, Try This. At the age of 24 when the album was released, P!nk had matured drastically, and so had her music. She says: "I have a humble side to me. I have a sweet side to me. I have a girly-girl side to me. I have, you know, the hopeless romantic, and tough outer shell... I'm like an egg. I'm like a hard-boiled egg." When she was creating Try This, she just wanted it to be more fun. She didn't want to get up on stage and cry everytime she performed, like she did with M!ssundaztood. She just wanted to have fun. There are many songs on the album that have heavy messages, but they're conveyed through upbeat tempos and hard-rock music. Try This also contains the very first love song that P!nk ever wrote. It's appropriately called Love Song.
"I believe that in this world there are leaders and there are followers, and I hope to be a leader every morning when I wake up. For me, it's not really a choice, like I don't set out like 'I'm gonna be different.' I just, you know, I go with what's in my heart. And it's a really good feeling when you go against the grain and I wish more people would do it."
"I love to sing. All through my life. As worthless as you can feel when you're younger, and as pointless and as small, I always loved to sing - and I knew I was good at it."
