Alecia Beth Moore was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania on September 8, 1979. For as far back as she can remember, all she ever wanted to do was sing. She would sing every chance she got - school plays, gospel at church, punk bands at 13. She said: "Any problem I've ever had just fades away when I'm on stage."
When Alecia was only 7 years old, her parents split up, which was the milestone in a life torn apart. Her father, Jim, was a Vietnam Veteren, and her mother, Judy, was an ER nurse - she has a brother, Jason, who is two years older than she is.
The turning point in her "career" came when she was just 16 years old: she was at a club and her friends told her to get up on stage and sing, so she did. The DJ told her that she had a good voice and that if she came back on Friday's he'd give her a guest spot.
Not long after that, she was signed by LA Reid and she was recording her first album, Can't Take Me Home.
The name "P!nk" came about for various reasons. One being that growing up, her and her friend's favorite movie was Resevoir Dogs. The character Mr. Pink in the movie is a wise-ass and all of Alecia's friends agreed that she was Mr. Pink... The name stuck. (However LA and her decided that they should drop the "Mr." because it was likely to confuse people!) She now even has a tattoo that says "Mr. Pink" - it's on her inner left thigh. (She has over 20 tattoos all together!)
After her first album was such a success, P!nk recorded her second album, M!ssundaztood. She felt that her first record didn't portray who she really was so she went against what everyone told her to do, and she created M!ssundaztood. The entire album is a realistic portrayal of her life. Brutal, honest, painful, but very real. Very truthful. After that album was released she had finally made a name for herself. P!nk is quoted as saying: "The feedback that I got from listeners and from music lovers was, like, 'thank you for helping me not commit suicide', 'thank you for not being skinny', and to me, that's bigger than music. I don't care what anyone says about me. I always thought there was a reason for the pain, there was a reason for the experience, there was a reason for everything. And here it is: this is my reason. This is my mission." Her dream was fullfilled with M!ssundaztood. She was making music for the reasons she always wanted to: to get herself heard, to tell the truth. She said: "When I made M!ssundaztood, it was like 'yes, finally I will be heard.'" She's also quoted as saying: "I accept the challenge that kids are going to be relating to me moreso than to a lot of other people because I am telling the truth, and I have been there."
In November of 2003, P!nk released her third album, Try This. At the age of 24 when the album was released, P!nk had matured drastically, and so had her music. She says: "I have a humble side to me. I have a sweet side to me. I have a girly-girl side to me. I have, you know, the hopeless romantic, and tough outer shell... I'm like an egg. I'm like a hard-boiled egg." When she was creating Try This, she just wanted it to be more fun. She didn't want to get up on stage and cry everytime she performed, like she did with M!ssundaztood. She just wanted to have fun. There are many songs on the album that have heavy messages, but they're conveyed through upbeat tempos and hard-rock music. Try This also contains the very first love song that P!nk ever wrote. It's appropriately called Love Song.
"I believe that in this world there are leaders and there are followers, and I hope to be a leader every morning when I wake up. For me, it's not really a choice, like I don't set out like 'I'm gonna be different.' I just, you know, I go with what's in my heart. And it's a really good feeling when you go against the grain and I wish more people would do it."
"I love to sing. All through my life. As worthless as you can feel when you're younger, and as pointless and as small, I always loved to sing - and I knew I was good at it."

| | Wow. How about "none of the above"... She's amazing, beautiful, talented, and incredibly phenomenal. | PortraitOfPink | | HELLO-O!!! what part of "calling all pink haters" DO YOU NOT GET?? | me_myself_and_i | really now! be nice!!
ha thats rich, coming from me! | the_anarchist | | Yeah, and I see "calling all P!nk haters" and I immediately become defensive. No one talks trash on my girl without me saying something in defense. Deal with it. | PortraitOfPink |
Me, Myself & I - So why do you not like Pink's work. Now don't say "bitchy", "punk", "pop" or stuff like that. Try saying musically what you do not understand about her. | GrayBeard | | how she can come off saying shes rock or w/e she says she is and still be pop. also i dont respect her really cuz i dont think she writes most of her own music. if she did she wouldnt be trying so hard to change her genre. it just doesnt work that way. and i can say whatever the hell i want its called freedom of speech. and this is my topic. | me_myself_and_i |
Me, Myself & I - I am not saying u don't have the right to say anything. What I am saying is say something. So far u r just talking hate.
Think about it, a painter is judged on his/her paintings; a car racer is judged on his/her car racing ability; a plumber is judged by how well he/she plumbs - none of them r judge on what they say or what others say about them other than what is said about their WORK.
So say something about Pink's WORK. She writes and performs music. What do u not like about her MUSIC?
See I am beginning to think u actually have never heard her music. Or maybe u don't understand her music. Whatever the situation. u never say anything about her MUSIC. | GrayBeard | | She writes all her own music. ALL her own music. | PortraitOfPink | | haha quite the contrary i've listened to her way more than is healthy my sister plays her 24/7 and i cant stand the mood of her songs, her music, her voice, her face, her style, or anything about her. i do understand her music its explained to me just about every day and i couldnt care any less if i tried whether or not she writes her own music but i dont think she does | me_myself_and_i | | I don't understand how you "don't think she does" write her own music. Why do you think that? She, without a doubt, writes it all. Why do you think differently? | PortraitOfPink | | because shes tried to change her genre, style, and overall mood of her music sevral times and if u write your own music u cant just go and do that | me_myself_and_i | god ur such a bitch...i dont play pink THAT much!!!
not since u broke m!ssundaztood that is... | the_anarchist | | You can't go and change your music if you write it yourself? Actually, it makes more sense that when written by the artist that it changes a lot. People's styles, feelings, moods, and attitudes change over time. People's views on certain things can get stronger or weaker. It makes a lot of sense that it's changed so drastically. She does write her own music and I think it's perfectly obvious that she does. All of her music reflects that that's going on in her life at that moment. I'm a huge fan of hers so I know about circumstances in her life that maybe you don't know about, so perhaps that's why it doesn't make much sense to you. But all of her music perfectly reflects situations in her life at the time the songs were written. | PortraitOfPink | | And I just realized that this is a rather civil topic. I'm impressed with the input, rather than the typical "I'm right, you're wrong" responses that are so common on BandHunt. Very cool. :) | PortraitOfPink | | right. anyway, though it IS true that there are tons of things going on in pinks life that i couldnt care any less about, there's always a certain flair or style that everybody has that just cant change, though their mood or circumstances may change. i myself am a music writer and i have a certain style that would be impossible to change. its not just your mood that influences your music, that will influence the mood or lyrics of your music, not the style. the style has to do with how your brain works. nobody's style is the same, and frankly pink's changed her style too many times for me to have any confidence in the fact that she may write her own music | me_myself_and_i | | shut up your a bitch. she OBVIOUSELY writes her own music, and thats final. listen to portraitofpink, you imbicile!!! | the_anarchist | | fuck u and get out of here this is for people with the brains to write a competent reply (u knokw, more than 1-syllable words!) and therefor u dont qualify, "anarchist" | me_myself_and_i | | I know what you're saying about the style changing, and I understand what you mean. And at this point I'm aware I can't convince you that she does, in fact, write her own music, so I'll suppose I'll stop trying now. I've done my job of putting in my input and insight and trying to get my point across. Guess I can't do any better than that. | PortraitOfPink | | thank u 4 respecting my views. i understand where ur coming from also. im also glad ur giving up cuz i've run out of arguments i'd just end up repeating myself | me_myself_and_i |
Me_Myself_&_I - two things:
(1) I am SUPER impressed that u write music. I think that writing music is the closest a person can get to the beauty of music, other than performing the music that they themselves write.
Do you play any instruments? U already have my respect for writing but if u sang ur songs I would have to put u up on a pedestal!!!
Keep Writing!!!!
(2) U can rest assurred that Pink writes her own songs by the song copywrite. Believe it or not the author of a song makes as much, and often MORE, money on the song as the performer of the song.
With the MILLIONS of dollars associated with songs these days the copyrights displayed are definitely accurate. And Pink is the copyright holder of all her songs. U can buy rights to a song, but not the copyright registration with ASCAP. | GrayBeard | "im also glad ur giving up cuz i've run out of arguments i'd just end up repeating myself"
Haha, yeah, me too. That's part of the reason I decided to give up, actually! | PortraitOfPink |
Me_Myself_&_I - What kind of songs do you write? Do you write just the lyrics or the music also.
And about Pink changing styles, one of the best song writers, Neil Diamond, after he had several fantastically successful albums took several years off just so he could change his song writing style, the result being his "Beautiful Noise" album. So songwriters really do and can change styles by choice. | GrayBeard | | i do sing my own songs. i also play drums, but only if our drummer is sick cuz hes way better than me. i write mostly rock, some rap, it all depends on who in the band is doing the vocals. im glad ur impressed most people dont really like us, but mostly cuz the ruling pwer in our skool (AKA miss popularity) hates us, but we usually get a good turnout w/e we have a garage concert...yes, we'r still stuck in our garage phaze... | me_myself_and_i | | Pink is a great, powerful woman. i think her songs are catchy and she has a lot of fans. She is not bitchy at all, she just stands up for what she believes in, which is great and i know she inspires a lot of young girls out of the stereotypical or society see's today. i think tahst great! She cares a lot, if you calss that as a bitch then go ahead. | lellykelly | | ok, heres the deal. your saying some things about pink that u could only know if u knew her personally. i dont, but based on the attitude i hear in her music i think shes bitchy. yes im calling her bitchy. and unless u know her personally, u cant exactly say that she cares a lot. u really dont know that. | me_myself_and_i | hey, look i am one of pinks biggest fans but u cant say about pink that she is a polite girl and not too bitchy, but madonna is sure a bitch but look where is she now !!!
Pink is super funny, honest, she does care, talented, hot, ya she is punky...
I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVEEE HEEEEEEEEEER! | punky_pink | hi... you guys dont know me yet, hehe. Read all that you guys wrote and there is alot to say.
Pink wrote some of her songs. On the CD it tells you. But pink did not write some of them. She coppied some.... like, "OH MISSERY". So i guess everybody was a little bit right on that one.
Yes... somebody can change their minds alot. As you already know. Just read my screen name... "emotional_bitch". I go through alot too. Believe me. Sometimes I will break down and cry for no reason at all then the next minute be bouncing off the walls.
I think that everybody is open to their own oppinion. I agree with everybody. I think her first cd was awsome, her second cd was ok, and her last cd sucks.
that is all that i got to say... | emotional_bitch | me_myself_and_i is unavailable for comment right now, so i'm going to step in on my clients behalf.
everybody does change a lot (as my client demonstrates quite well) but that doesnt mean that it's all for the better. yes, some of pinks stuff on her first cd may have rocked, i don't know (never really listened to it) but i must say her latest work seems forced and overdone. but i will add, emotional bitch, a question: how can you agree with everybody on this topic post if just about everybone on it has a contridicting opinion? i seems to me that you take parts of everybody's opinion and agree with them, but not all of it, so therefor you have your OWN opinion.
thank you for your excellent feedback, everyone!
me_myself_and_i, c/o fighter_vicious | fighter_vicious | Me_myself_i you know u could be right about the song thing but just cause your a song writer too doesnt mean your above anyone so u r entitled to ur opinion but think whose been in the spotlight taking all this bashing from people. I f you ar really going to make it with your songs im sure you are going to havesome haters too. aND I ALSO FAMILIARIZE MYSELF WITH THAT MISS POPULARITY GIRL . i deal with one almost every single day. doesnt it make you wann shoot them?:) | thefrothymonkey | | | |
