"Thurro-P
“This is by far the best album I have ever put together.” – Willie Moore Jr.
Willie Moore Jr., the multi-talented, self proclaimed leader of R&B’s resurrection, also known to his friends and fans as Pretty Willie or P-Dub anticipates the release of his new album, “Thurro-P (Pronounced Therapy)” in spring of 2007. His new album to be released on his WILFLO label, features a long list of guest appearances such as, Cedric the Entertainer, Don P (Trillville), Potzee (Derrty ENT. Quor), and Hoo Bangin artist Rukka Puff.
Willie developed a passion for music at the age of seven through his participation in talent shows, singing and playing the piano for the church youth choir. It was through these experiences that he understood that his life’s calling was to become a prominent musician. While he grew up in the generation that knew the music of fellow artists such as Michael Jackson, Ready for the World, Shai, Jodeci, NWA and the Ghetto Boyz, Willie developed an appreciation of the music from artists of prior generations. A great memory is the time he spent with his father and his friends as they listened to and performed renditions of music artists such as BB King, Bobby Blue Bland, and Little Milton while performing in local juke joints.
At the age of twelve, Willie started his own group called the Baby Gangstaz. This group landed him a deal with a local record company, French Jamz. Through this opportunity they were able to gain local fame and release their first album titled, “E-Z Goin’ Gangsta”. Willie remarks, “At the time Kris Kross and ABC (Another Bad Creation) were out and it was cool to have a kid group, so we were able to sell a lot of records. I made a few hundred bucks and thought I was rich!” If no other time before had he not received affirmation of his life calling it was then.
As time progressed, Willie learned that his talents lie not only in music but in athletics as well. In 1997 he became the Missouri State Champion in the 100 meter dash. This accomplishment earned him a full track scholarship to the University of Mississippi where he earned a degree in psychology, pledged the historically black fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi, and grew into a very prominent college student athlete. Although, he had a deep passion for his sport, it still did not quell his passion for music. In his senior year of school, Willie made a life altering decision. He decided to pursue his music career full-time. Shortly thereafter, Willie was signed by Universal Records for his single, “Roll Wit Me”. Willie attributes a portion of the success of this single to the local radio station KATZ 100.3 The Beat. Willie, (then Pretty Willie) recorded his debut album, “Enter the Life of Suella”, a mix of Hip Hop and R&B.
After his album achieved regional success with two hit singles (Man at Home and Roll Wit Me), Willie understood that if he was to have complete control of his destiny and level of success- he would need to learn the music business for himself. Under the guidance of his then manager, Ron Scott, a prominent radio representative and employee of Def Jam records, Willie became involved in the radio business.
Willie became a well-known radio personality in the mid-west region on KATZ 100.3- The Beat. His show, “Pretty Radio” became the #1 radio show on the weekends. This radio show provided a bevy of opportunities for Willie to grow in knowledge and progress his music career. He was able to learn industry lingo and test his new music on the listeners.
Willie states, “Being on the air was cool, it allowed me touch the people and hear their feedback on my records weekly. The one thing I remember is the brutal honesty from callers.”
From this process of testing, Willie emerged with two bona fide hits, “Wooo”, a hip hop hit, and “Lay Your Body Down”, an R & B track. Lay Your Body Down later became an unofficial St. Louis love anthem. This success propelled Willie’s career onto new levels. It enabled him to launch his own company “WILFLO Records” (2004), a tribute to his parents Willie Sr. and Flora. Without their unconditional love and support, the magnitude of his success would be non-existent.
With a new label and a renewed sense of confidence, Willie released his second album “Pretty Willie vs. P-Dub”. This album was reflective of his multi-talents in both Rap and R&B. Although he was clearly talented in both areas, people often debated which style they enjoyed more. Never forgetting his fans and their importance, he decided to let them speak and make the decision for him. He held an online competition where the fans had to vote on which style they loved the most. And the verdict is in, the fans wanted him to sing, sing, sing!!! There was no question; the fans loved their love anthem king.
From this Willie presented his new hit, “Four Walls”, a slow, sexy record which solidified his position as a hit maker. Willie states, “I did this album independently so I could be myself and build my own fan base, my way!”
The first six songs on the album, “Pretty Willie vs. P-Dub” are up-tempo; a tribute to hip-hop, with the middle song being a reflection of his versatility between rap and R&B. On “VS”, Willie explains the past struggles he encountered as he makes his climb in the music industry as an independent label owner and artist. The final cuts on the album are a series of Willie’s love ballads, a reflection of his singing abilities.
With two successful albums under his belt, Willie and his partner Rod Odom gained airplay on P1, P2, and P3 radio stations across the mid-west and southern regions and set out on a multiple college tour which they were able to sell out stadiums in major cities and markets.
In 2005, Willie’s music and success of his album reached the ears of Warner Bros. This union led to the production of his latest album, “P-Dub Presents Willie Moore Jr.” Co-Produced by the Muzic Doctors (Big Lou, 88, Theo, and Willie J), Willie has coined this album as,”a culmination of everything he has been through and the prominence gained in the Mid-west and South. It’s a good blend; one that will be a fruitful return to his roots.” He states,” It’s not just another R&B album, it’s an R& Me album-rhythm and me! There’s a lot of me on it. I come from Berkeley, a hood that ain’t known for a lot of positive things and I’m definitely showing the hood how to stay positive and follow your dreams throughout. I believe some people get success by chance, but I’m destined for success through this struggle. So, I will appreciate it a lot more than a person who got it by chance. Dreams Do Come True!”
