THE SONG OF MATTHEW, now featured on this site, retells the gospel story as an epic poem. The text of the poem retains the meaning of conventional versions of the New Testament in detail, while offering a suitable form for musical settings of the entire gospel or any passage of particular interest. The text does not include any of the false and sinful condemnations of Jews which have historically contributed to the practice of eliminationist anti-semitism. The crucifixion of Jesus is shown as the assertion of Roman power, with the collusion of certain religious authorities, within the context of a cosmopolitan community. In all other respects it is a text for singing that is “congruent” with holy scripture, as advised in The Book of Common Prayer used in the Episcopal Church.

GOSPELS IN VERSE is an attempt to introduce regular meter (and in three cases, rhyme) into the four new testament Gospels. Each version of the story of Jesus Christ is thereby transformed into a long poem. The process of adapting the text has been variously referred to as verse rendering, versification, or paraphrasing. From a poet’s viewpoint, this requires persistent effort to uncover latent musicality in the relatively archaic language of the scripture. I call it “teaching the words how to dance.”

PARAPHRASIS, turning poetry into prose or prose into poetry, was recognized as an important technique for training in rhetoric from Roman times throughout the middle ages. In his Confessions, Augustine mentions a school assignment to paraphrase passages from the Aeneid. Early Christians wrote poetry which extended this antique rhetorical practice, making it an end in itself. The Spaniard Juvencus (4th century) paraphrased the four Gospels into Latin hexameters; the Egyptian Nonnus (5th century) similarly reworked the Gospel of John. A Ligurian author, Arator, made a public recitation of his verse paraphrase of the Acts of the Apostles in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome in 544.

At the other end of the middle ages, the emergence of writing in languages other than Latin also gave birth to versified Gospels in these languages. These mostly appeared from the 13th to the 16th centuries in areas that are now part of Germany, France, Holland, England and elsewhere. We can speculate that the authors wanted to offer “scripture” to be recited even by people who couldn’t read. Versified paraphrases of the Psalms were especially popular, and a few texts from these books are still to be found in today’s hymnals.

My Quote: The Brain -- is wider than the Sky --
For -- put them side by side --
The one the other will contain
With ease -- and You -- beside --

The Brain is deeper than the sea --
For -- hold them -- Blue to Blue --
The one the other will absorb --
As Sponges -- Buckets -- do --

The Brain is just the weight of God --
For -- Heft them -- Pound for Pound --
And they will differ -- if they do --
As Syllable from Sound --
