Review of my non-existent EP (Self titled)
By Ryan VanDette
Empty Bottles is one of those bands that consistently turns out music that everyone can love. Originally from Buffalo, New York, they drop their debut so the rest of the country can hear what they’ve been missing. Craig Robbins, Ryan VanDette, and Bob Brockman form the core of this group, and work with a number of different drummers to create their one-of-a-kind rock sound. On their new self-titled EP, the band puts together an eclectic mix of five songs for the masses. Alternative and classic rock influences intertwine with tales of “Power, lust, and worldly greed,” as well as love lost, and found again the untraditional way.
The Bottles kick it all off with “Lemonaide”, which pulsates with a metal staccato verse that flows into the amped-up chorus. VanDette, the vocalist extraordinaire, starts off in his soft baritone and blows up later into his trademark growl. Robbins lends his treble leads to embellish the churning crescendo of grit. Bassist Brockman dances his way up the fret board to set the rock solid rhythm, which finishes in true rock classic fashion.
Next, “1/2 Even Deal” is a melodic journey through one night in a budding rock stars career. The lyrics take the listener back and forth from public to private life. Dubbed the Pirate Song by some fans, VanDette howls his way over a pounding chorus, which also weaves its way back from a lilting respite. Robbins adds a second melody by interlacing a counter lead and the vocal melody. The song ends in a sated gasp, as in after climax.
“Flowers” is a song with a story, about how to stalk and deal with your true love, which came about during practice sessions. Although the main lick had been written and worked on for years, the song really clicked together after the whole band became involved. “This song is one of those that you hear of that kick around for years, then just magically transform themselves one day,” stated VanDette in a recent interview. “It really rocks you to the core and chills you to the bone with the lyrics – but I think everyone can relate to it on some level.”
For one of the most powerful hits of the EP, “Vengeance” steals your breath by coupling heavy guitars and heavier beats. Robbins tears through leads as Brockman pounds out solid bass riffs to set the tone. VanDette lends solid vocals that are truly complementary, and not overpowering, to the industrial/ grunge feel of the song. An almost tribalistic drumbeat anchors this song to the floor and gives you something to jump off of on your way to the top of the mosh pit.
Last, “Humble” drills its way into your head and leaves a lasting impression that compels you to press play and listen to the EP all over again. With its unique rhythm and old world inspired chord progression, the song builds to its climax and explodes into resolve. Again, Robbins and Brockman weave together to provide the serpentine backbone. VanDette adds vocal emotion behind the lyrical story of a person trying to find his or her way in the world. “Hard to think/You know I need not everything/ Humble Try, you know I want just a little thing (YOU KNOW I WANT JUST EVERYTHING).
(Here’s a little background information about this review. In June of 2006, Empty Bottles went into the studio at JAL Records to record this very EP. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the usual drummer was not able to make it. The engineer on hand, Eric Shemkovitz, luckily was able to step in and record the only two tracks – “Flowers” and “Humble”. After that, the band parted ways with its drummer and never returned to the studio. Empty Bottles has worked with three different drummers over the last six months, including Shemkovitz again, to stay on the live scene and hopefully return to the studio with a greater fan base waiting in the wings.)
