Random is a four-piece rock band from the Northwest side of Chicago. The band began in high school with current members Bill Kovacs and Tom Shallcross covering classic rock songs at local carnivals and events. Random continued to write and learn more covers which lead them to playing local bars at the ripe old age of 16. Several name changes and guitarists later, Random progressed down to Champaign for college where they met current guitar Vik Chaudhry.
After taking a break for one member’s military service, the band became a powerful force at both the bar scene and parties in Champaign The band maintained consistent shows on campus by becoming the house band at two campus bars and frequently played happy hours, fraternity parties and opening acts at the Canopy Club. Because they were playing two to three times a week the band continually worked on new material and learned a variety of great cover songs appropriate for the college scene. Not only did Random conquer the small city of Champaign, but the band began playing monthly in other cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Peoria and Indianapolis. The band even went on a ten cities in two weeks college tour in March of 2006 where they traveled from Iowa to Ohio State and everywhere in between. During summer and winter breaks they would come back to the local establishments of Chicago but were never in for a long enough time to gain consistency in the Chicago music scene.
With the members graduating from Illinois and moving back to Chicago, Random is ready to quit dabbling in the Chicago music scene and take it on full force. The band has decided to thicken their current sound by adding Chicago-native Devin Flahive on rhythm guitar. Taking less than a month to get situated with their current line up, Random now has all pieces needed to take off. In just two short months of being back in Chicago the band has played Lily’s, The Gin Mill, Joe’s on Weed St, Emerald Isle, Roscoe Village Fest and have other shows lined up in the near future (visit the upcoming show part of our website). Random is ready to extend their fanbase which already consists of hundreds of fans and friends whom are either originally from Chicago, or have moved up to the city after graduation.
Random currently consists of Bassist/Singer Bill Kovacs, Guitarist Vik Chaudhry, Guitarist Devin Flahive and Drummer Tom Shallcross. These dedicated musicians have been influenced by a variety of bands ranging from Pearl Jam, Led Zeppelin, Weezer, Moe, Foo Fighters, The Who, Sublime, Local H and many more. These influences can be seen at some of the bands shows where they decide to cover 1990’s rock anthems. Whatever the case may be, the band can play a 3 hour set of all covers at a sports bar or rock out their own originals at a local music venue.
With already existing connections in Chicago and, Random is lined-up to play in front of a huge crowd on any day of the week. Throw in the band’s natural talent and continued perseverance, and Random will find a way to be successful in Chicago.
