The Raveonettes consist of Sharin Foo, Sune Rose Wagner, Manoj Ramdas, and Jakob Hyer. The group began with Wagner and Foo. Since the late 1990s, Wagner wanted to start a band. He left his hometown of Copenhagen, Denmark to re-locate to Hell’s Kitchen, New York. From there he moved to Las Vegas, west Hollywood, and island off of Seattle, and eventually back to Copenhagen where he got together with Foo. Wagner’s influences are Buddy holly, Bob Dylan, the Everly Brothers, Sonic Youth, and Jesus & Mary Chain. Foo wanted to start a band because she was fed up with the lack of influential music groups coming out of Denmark. When she met Wagner, she was playing shows at local clubs. Foo’s influences are The Beatles and Velvet Underground. For sixth moths, Foo had lived in India where she studied gawwali music and dhrupad; ancient Hindu music. Foo and Wagner decided to call their group, The Raveonettes. Prior to constructing their debut album, the duo made a pact. They decided none of their songs would be longer than three minutes, and all the songs had to be in Bb minor. Also, they could use only three chords. The result; their debut album entitled Whip It On. The four track album with accompaniment from a drum machine was released in Europe during the summer of 2002 on the Crunchy Frog label. The Raveonettes soon after, traveled to the United states to play a show. It was in New York where they were discovered by producer Richard Gottehrer (Blondie, The Go-Go’s). The Raveonettes were soon signed to Columbia records. The American debut, The Chain Gang of Love, was released in September 2003. Their first single, “That Great Love Sound,” is on high rotation on Much Music and MTV2.
