I believe Disintegration proceeds their first greatest hits collection, Staring At The Sea. Indeed, this album kickstarted their second coming with mega hits like Love Song and Fascination Street. It's quite an aptly named work, because it clearly disintegrates on continuous play. It opens pompously with Plain Song and Pictures of You, two very high-strung, melodic songs. The album clearly drops tempo later, yet does not decrease in value. Disintegration is something of a story book listening experience. It has it's highs and it has it's lows. A truly beautiful album.

Many Cure fans bicker whether this release, or Pornography is better. I would have to chose this one. It has long and beautiful masterpieces, true to its gothic name, but also give you a taste of the best of the other side of the cure. The commercially successful side. Lovesong, from this CD is the only piece by the Cure that has ever reached number one on the American Billboard charts. Other songs, such as Lullaby show that The Cure can be as fun as they are dark, (not to mention gives a good beat, almost reminiscant of funk or blues, like The Lovecats.) If you are a fan purly of the striking and beautifully depressing songs, I would suggest you check out "Faith" one of The Cure's most overlooked and wonderful albums before purchasing Pornography or Disintegration.
