David Ryan Adams was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1974. Growing up as a child, Adams was heavily influenced by country music. He listened to stars such as Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. As he grew into his teenage years, Adams began to listen to, and be influenced by punk rock. When he was fifteen, he began to teach himself the electric guitar and write his own music. At sixteen, Adams formed his first band. His band, The Patty Duke Syndrome, soon received a fairly large following in the group’s hometown on Jacksonville. When he was 19, Adams and fellow members of The patty Duke Syndrome moved to nearby Raleigh, North Carolina in hopes to gain a wider audience. In 1994, however, Adams left the band.
He soon joined a band called Whiskeytown (Whiskeytown is slang for getting drunk). The group consisted of Phil Wanscher (guitar), Caitlin Cary (violin), Steve Grothman (bass), and Eric ‘Skillet” Gilmore (drums). Whiskeytown released their debut album, Faithless Steel, in 1995. The album was released on the local label, mood food. The group was soon signed to Outpost Records. In the summer of 1997, Whiskeytown released Stranger’s Almanac. At this time, the band was having many problems. Only Adams and Wanscher were left in the group. The group’s shows became erratic due to the fact they never had a steady and set performance schedule. The group, although falling apart, released Pneumonia. The album, however, was never truly released due to the label going out of business. Whiskeytown soon broke apart.
Adams immediately began working on his solo career. He began acoustic touring. In 2000, Adams released his debut, solo album entitled Heartbreaker. Many of the songs were co-written by Adams and writing legends Gillian Welch and David Rawling. Heartbreaker was highly endorsed by singer/songwriter Elton John. Soon after the release of Heartbreaker, Adams was signed to universal records new Americana imprint label, Lost highway Records. In 2001, Lost Highway released the never-released Pneumonia from Whiskeytown.
Adams’s second solo album was entitled Gold. The album contained the hit single, ‘New York New York.” The song, which was really written about Adams break-up with a girlfriend, became a hit patronage song after the September 11 attacks. In 2002, Adams released Demolition. In November 2003, Ryan Adams released Love Is Hell, Part 1.
