David Ryan Adams was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina in 1974. Growing up as a child, Adams was heavily influenced by country music. He listened to stars such as Loretta Lynn, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and Johnny Cash. As he grew into his teenage years, Adams began to listen to, and be influenced by punk rock. When he was fifteen, he began to teach himself the electric guitar and write his own music. At sixteen, Adams formed his first band. His band, The Patty Duke Syndrome, soon received a fairly large following in the group’s hometown on Jacksonville. When he was 19, Adams and fellow members of The patty Duke Syndrome moved to nearby Raleigh, North Carolina in hopes to gain a wider audience. In 1994, however, Adams left the band.
He soon joined a band called Whiskeytown (Whiskeytown is slang for getting drunk). The group consisted of Phil Wanscher (guitar), Caitlin Cary (violin), Steve Grothman (bass), and Eric ‘Skillet” Gilmore (drums). Whiskeytown released their debut album, Faithless Steel, in 1995. The album was released on the local label, mood food. The group was soon signed to Outpost Records. In the summer of 1997, Whiskeytown released Stranger’s Almanac. At this time, the band was having many problems. Only Adams and Wanscher were left in the group. The group’s shows became erratic due to the fact they never had a steady and set performance schedule. The group, although falling apart, released Pneumonia. The album, however, was never truly released due to the label going out of business. Whiskeytown soon broke apart.
Adams immediately began working on his solo career. He began acoustic touring. In 2000, Adams released his debut, solo album entitled Heartbreaker. Many of the songs were co-written by Adams and writing legends Gillian Welch and David Rawling. Heartbreaker was highly endorsed by singer/songwriter Elton John. Soon after the release of Heartbreaker, Adams was signed to universal records new Americana imprint label, Lost highway Records. In 2001, Lost Highway released the never-released Pneumonia from Whiskeytown.
Adams’s second solo album was entitled Gold. The album contained the hit single, ‘New York New York.” The song, which was really written about Adams break-up with a girlfriend, became a hit patronage song after the September 11 attacks. In 2002, Adams released Demolition. In November 2003, Ryan Adams released Love Is Hell, Part 1.

ryan adams is lame hey
i just joined this meesage board so that i could speak my mind about mr. ryan adams. first and formost you are a weak ass poser who wishes that he could rock one tenth as hard as the people he talks shit about. not more then 5 min. ago i finished an article where adams blasts jack white because he may have said something. ok listen, if you think he is such a "pounce" as you called (look what poser you are in the first place using stupid english slang like 'pounce')way were you covering(no doubt badly) one of his songs. next you made fun of his clothes the fact that he wears red. at least he has a image and sound that are unique( no honestly, adam you don't look like every other art fag indie rocker i have ever seen)
and last, i think it is really sad when people who have little to no career/talent/chops/cool lyrics etc... bash some just so there name is highlighted in rolling stone. please adam don't make fun of some one who is sooooo much cooler, more talented and all around way rock and roll then you'll ever be. so stop brooding, put out that cigerette and beg mr. jack white to show you how to rock

| I agree on the fact that Ryan may have said some unnecessarily nasty things about Jack White [I read the article too], but it's their business, and also has NOTHING to do with either of their music.
The word is "ponce" and that's a really pathetic thing to hassle Ryan about. Honestly... his choice of words? Obviously you couldn't find enough real faults in him to fuel your post.
I'm not trying to defend Ryan, because it's none of my business, he has his own mouth and spine and doesn't need me to reply for him, and also because he pretty much brought this on himself. But I just have to say that I think it's pretty sad that you hassle him about his clothing and word choice.
Also, just because you aren't particularly keen on his music [come on, you like the White Stripes for goodness sake] doesn't mean that he's got no talent. I can admit that the Jack White is talented but I know that I'm just not touched by his music. Which is fine, it's taste. It's why there's more than one band in the world.
I think perhaps you should realise that Ryan Adams and Jack White are involved in completely different genres of music... if Jack showed Ryan how to rock, I'd stop buying his CD's. | lidz | well said...
ps. ryan adams lyrics are are great, he has talent, a career...and probably "chops"... so what im basically saying is.... youre an idiot | amyhuddd | I cant believe what i just read....honestly...the white stripes may be way more successful, but thats because they are sell-outs. Jack freaks me out anyway. and Ryan can say whatever the fuck he wants to about anyone, its his life and he is free to tell it like it is. Ryan's songs have meaning for sure....unlike the white stripes songs on fucking doorbells and whatnot | in_casino_out | uhhhhh....go to hell you stupid son of a bitch...ryan adams is amazing and you have no idea what you are talking about...who gives a shit if he said something about your little idol...he has the right because he kicks ass | tbsbandaid | yeah, I think Jack white is a much better song writer. I mean "Im thinking about my doorbell when you gonna ring it? When you gonna ring it?" Pure Genius...[/sarcasm] | 16knives |
Wow, talk about a debate. I just came here to see who ryan adams was and if I wanted to get into his music. From the sound of the support of his fans here, he must be pretty good.
On the other hand, I don't get it why any artist would bad mouth another artist. Maybe it was just a publicity stunt to get attention (it worked) but still it is dumb to dump on another artist. | GrayBeard | hey chazNasty,
clearly you know NOTHING | estas | hey, I been thinkin about jackoff white and his frickin doorbell and I want to slap his pasty, hallow, face. I really can't stand the way he has (somehow) deemed himself a rock god. Believe me, he has a long way to go! Furthermore, Ryan Adams is probably one of the most talented musicians on the planet and if you actually knew anything about music, you'd own every one of his albums.
Jack White is a fad, and a poor fad at that. And what IS with all the red and the "I'm so wierd, clearly I rock" image he's pushing? Gimmie a break...
