Whether obtuse, warm, aggressive, or soulful, Sean Haefeli’s music is a testament to the range of his creative background. And while this range embodies many genres, his insistent and restless creativity has remained constant.
Upon moving to Chicago in 1994, Sean entered DePaul University’s vocal studies program. After a year and a half, feeling creatively stifled, he left the program and began performing with an improvisational rock band. Following this project, Sean joined a talented R&B group, but once again, felt constrained. In his next evolution, he gravitated towards experimental jazz. This time, after becoming frustrated with his own limitations, Sean immersed himself in study.
After a few years of virtual silence, Sean slowly reemerged; this time, to lead his own project, which in 2002, became Natural Hunger. The music from this album confounds simple categorization, departing from harmonic, structural and lyrical conventions.
True to form, Sean has continued to restlessly push forward. Over the last year, he has led the Sean Haefeli Project, integrating electronic elements with bass, drums, keys, vocals and horns. Performing regularly in Chicago, the group continues to expand on its initial conception, adapting a unique and visionary synthesis of electronic, jazz and soul music.
Along with contributing to the development of cutting-edge music, Sean performs classic, straight-ahead jazz. Since this tradition has so greatly informed his development, he remains committed to honoring the masters, and works regularly in solo and trio settings, playing clubs and events. |
