The Goss - NY magazine - Article on Shannon This month we talk to Australia’s own country boy Shannon Noll. Over in the States for G’Day USA and a bunch of shows through North America we chat to Shannon about run ins with the paparazzi, working with Ritchie Sambora and turning up his album in the US of A
Shannon Noll : Bringing Rock Back
Australia’s boy from the bush is back in the city and ready to get loud in New York City!
Shannon’s the type of bloke you would have around for a Sunday BBQ or head on down to the local for a few pots with. A down to earth artist with none of the rock star complex that could have easily come with the tremendous amount of success he has achieved over the past few years.
For those not familiar with Nollsy, he rose to fame as the runner up in the first series of Australian Idol. At the G’Day USA Broadway show held in New York last week Shannon confessed to the audience he was the “official winner of all the losers”. While so many Idol singers fail to reach higher levels of success after the cameras cease to roll, Shannon has stood out from the pack.
With an incredible vocal style and range, Shannon's rock infused pop has helped him sell over 1 million albums in Australia and accumulate an impressive eleven top 10 Australian singles-the first Aussie artist to reach this record!! Growing up in Condobolin, country NSW Shannon played in cover bands with his brothers honing his vocal skill and stage presence while still helping out on the family farm. After encouragement from his brothers, the boy from Condo joined the hopefuls to audition for the first ever series of Australian Idol.
Australia needed a voice, another working class man that we could identify with. It was after Noll performed the Moving Pictures 80’s hit ‘What about me’ on the show, that Australia had that voice back. Now its time for the US to hear that voice and we caught up with Shannon who is preparing for his assault on the US market. He is, as always, charming, enthusiastic about his music and completely won us over with that contagious cheeky laugh of his.
Shannon is ready for the challenge that lies ahead of him. Over in the US he has been writing in LA and performing a spate of shows on the West Coast before now heading over to New York for G’Day USA and a headlining show. Shannon says he is raring to go “I’m really excited about it. Actually I’m really anxious to get in there and do it. We’ve sort of been rehearsing a lot all year and we’ve only done 5 shows. I am really looking forward to getting out and actually performing because that’s the one thing I like the most out of the whole business”.
With many Aussie acts heading over to the UK, Shannon’s jump into the notoriously rough US market is impressive. Shannon says he may stand out in the US because “ my style of music is probably similar to maybe Bon Jovi or something like that or like Springsteen. There’s a bit of a niche there that I might be able to slip into if I’m lucky you know. There are not too many single male artists in that blue collar realm”. With rock taking a noticeable back seat to rap and hip hop he thinks now is the right time to bring rock back. “I think maybe cause there haven’t been the Springsteen’s, Melloncamp’s, or Bryan Adams for that matter. There hasn’t been any of them guys around for a while so I think maybe that’s why the solo sort of story teller has gone out the window a little bit so hopefully we can bring that back”.
The singer’s third album has brought him back onto the Aussie Charts with ‘Turn It Up’ going platinum. He is proud of this album and says “We tried to take another step further towards a bit more of a rock and organic sound. I wrote most of it here in the States and recorded it here as well and I wrote a few songs in Australia as well. So it’s a really good mix of international and domestic songwriters. We had 30 songs to choose from and got it down to 12 and so I’m really stoked with the quality of each song and I think it is my best album to date”.
Two of those 12 songs ‘Loud’ and ‘In Pieces’ have been the latest singles with ‘Loud’ peaking on the Aussie charts at number 3. One song in particular, ‘Sorry is just too late’ was a collaboration with Bon Jovi’s own Ritchie Sambora. Shannon says “Richie was just an absolute pleasure a really really nice fella and an amazingly talented guy. He jumped on the piano and played the piano just as good as he played the guitar. He’s really good to work with and really appreciative of what I brought to the table, so that was really gratifying”.
With so many Aussie artists heading over to the States to give it a go, we ask Shannon if he has any advice to give others who may be about to make a similar move. With a laugh he says “Mate, not so much as yet cause’ we’re really in the early days you know? I’ve sort of only ever been over here writing so this trip is the only time I’ve sort of started actually doing promos and interviews and playing live gigs, so I would like it if anyone could give me some tips at the moment!!”. We advise he could take of his shirt, head to rehab or slap some paparazzi. Continuing with his signature rough chuckle he jokes “Yeah, ok cool. I’m going out tonight, my band just arrived so I’ll keep that in mind! I’ll just walk up and slap a few paparazzi They’ll take photos of that me after that at least”.
His ability to remain the down to earth bloke is endearing and it is obvious that he doesn’t take himself too seriously. This is never more evident than we bring up if he sees acting in his future and which US hit show he could see himself appearing in. “Actually it’s definitely something down the track if the right sort of thing came up that I’d definitely considered. I did a lot of that sort of stuff at school and then some local community drama club stuff and that sort of thing. Definitely. Grey’s Anatomy? I don’t know how I’d go with all of the doctor lingo!”. We ask if he would play a patient or a doctor to which he replies “I can play dead pretty well” and with a reassuring laugh “Yeap just laying there!!!”.
We could very well be seeing more of Shannon in the States with him revealing a move to the US could be on the cards to make it easier being away from his wife and three young kids. “It’s pretty tough, actually just missing my family and that sort of thing. But hopefully we may even think about moving over here around June or something like that so that will make it a lot easier basing my family over here somewhere, but that’s sort of up in the air at the moment”.
What were not seeing more of is his signature flavour savour, that’s right folks the gotte is gone! “Someone told me I look younger without it” he reveals. During the past few months it has been the question on everyone’s lips. “I’ve sort of got asked about it a fair bit in Australia over the last 6 months. Cause’ I’d walk around the place pretty freely you know when I got rid of it. It’s only sort of now that I’m sort of not getting away with it anymore”. We wonder if it would have been lucrative to get in with a campaign with Gillette. He replies, “I can grow it back if you know anyone from Gillette!”.
We go over the massive album sales, intensive touring and a swag of awards the Condo kid has accomplished in the past few years and ask is it all just a little bit surreal? “Yeah, it’s a bit wild when you take it all into account, it had a bit of an impact then when you were just telling me. You tend not to get a lot of time to sit back and take stock if you know what I mean? So yeah, when I sort of sit down and really think about it its been a pretty wild ride, hopefully its not over yet so we might be able to add some more land marks on there if were lucky”.
Turn it up loud in the car Shannon, your ride in the US is only just beginning with plenty of opportunity to add to those landmarks.
