Silverwheel mix the beauty and power of traditional music with the imagination and dynamics of rock. From heartbreaking airs and songs to irresistible grooves that make the most of traditional dance power.
Five experienced, soulful musicians blend harmony vocals, acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki, bass and drums, fronted by a singer who commands the stage.
The band formed in Sheffield in 2005 and have already played the Sheffield, Holmfirth & Stainsby Folk Festivals, Sheffield & Newark Beer festivals, DevJam & Ruskin festivals, and Tewkesbury Medieval Fair. They have been featured on BBC Radio York and Ken Nicol's Folkcast, and are lined up to appear at this year's Solfest, Glasson Dock Festival (for the 2nd year running) & Broomhill Festival (for the 3rd year running).
Anna Grant - fiddle, vocals
Anna is classically trained on the fiddle, but alongside she has played Irish trad tunes from the first time she ever picked up the instrument. She played for many years in Sheffield folk band Kingfisher Blue before joining Silverwheel.
French Freddy - drums
Fred ran away from home in Paris at 16 and came - for reasons no one's fully worked out - to Sheffield. His credits include folk rockers Stafford Galley, classic rockers CRF, and Dead by Friday. He works as drum tech for Bobby Arechiga (Strongheart) and Andy Edwards (Robert Plant, IQ)
Sue Cain - vocals, mandolin
Sue moved to Sheffield to join a Morris dancing side (really!). Her musical baptism came in the city through trad sessions and floor spots, and she's since taken to the stage as if she was born to it. Though she's been connected with trad music for some years, Silverwheel is her first band.
Chris McMahon - guitar, bouzouki, bass, vocals
Chris first rose to obscurity in cult prog rockers Haze, who toured endlessly to a small but worryingly dedicated audience. After hard rockers Strongheart he formed 'heavy wood' act Treebeard in '98. His tastes and CV are wide and he'll play anywhere they'll let him on.
Peter Rophone - bass, guitar, vocals
Peter has a long track record in acts no one's ever heard of. His CV includes a psychedelic improvisational band, indy rock, acapella gospel and escapades with the Tegwen Roberts big band, as well as ceilidh merchants, Roger the Badger. His guitars are silver. He jumps around a lot. |
