Smile Empty Soul was formed by high schoolers in Santa Clarita, California in the summer of 1999. The band consists of vocalist/guitarist Sean Danielsen, bass player Ryan Martin, and drummer Derek Gledhill. The band was formed as a "mutual love of music". Smile Empty Soul played around locally in the Santa Clarita area, then they made their way down to the Sunset Strip. That is where former indie rock band ThroBack member Todd Parker heard a demo tape of the trio. He immediatly gave the tape to contacs, and Smile Empty Soul had a record deal with Lava Records. And in May 2003, Smile Empty Soul released their self-titled debut album. Danielsen claims that a lot of his lyrics are just something he wants people to relate to. And some of his songs like "Every Sunday" and "The Other Side" are just songs that he experienced as a child, and I think it's great how he puts all of his emotion and anger, all into his music.
