Soulfly mixes the tribal sound of lead singer Max Cavaleras home country of Brazil with the ripping chords of heavy metal , but it didn't seem possible that Max Cavalera could leave his first tribal/metal project Sepultura which he fronted from 1984 until 1996 when he felt that he needed something new, so he formed the band Soulfly, getting the name from the Deftones song "Head up".
But Max needed a band back him up so he got Mikey Doling-Guitars, Roy Mayorga-Drums, and Marcello D.Rapp-Bass . So by the time of 1998 their first album Soulfly came out to great reviews to metal lovers and even Sepultura fans seemed to like it. Produced by Ross Robinson (KoRn, Coal Chamber) with guest appearances from Chino Moreno from the Deftones and Fred Durst from Limp Bizkit. After months of reckless touring came another metal/tribal masterpiece called "Back To the Primitive" in 2000 with such collaborations as Sean Lennon and Cory Taylor from slipknot , again success and a growing fan base came to Soulfly and their collective sound of metal grew accost the world.
The newest album “3” which came out in 2002 with some what harsher reviews than the other albums . but this quartet of musicians don't play for the critics, they play for the fans.
