The Spice Girls burst onto the pop scene in June of '96 with their smash hit single "Wannabe." The female quintet consisted of leader and eldest member Geri/Ginger Spice (born Geraldine Halliwell on Aug. 18, 1972 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England), Mel C/Sporty Spice (born Melanie Jayne Chisholm on Jan. 12, 1974 in Liverpool, Merseyside, England), Posh Spice (born Victoria Adams on Apr. 17, 1975 in Goff's Oak, Hertfordshire, England), Mel b/Scary Spice (born Melanie Janine Brown on May 29, 1975 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England), and Baby Spice (born Emma Lee Bunton on Jan. 21, 1976 in Barnet, England).
In late of '93 all five girls moved in together and started writing potential demo songs. In '95 they caught the ear of future manager Simon Fuller(creator of Pop Idol and American Idol) who would get them a record deal with Virgin records. Although the album was released in the UK in '96, the US had their first taste in February of '97 when their first single "Wannabe" sky-rocketed to the number one spot in just four weeks. A month or so later the group became the first UK act to enter the billboard charts at number one with their debut album Spice. Their follow-up singles, "Say You'll be There" and ª become 1", also reached the top of the charts around the world. Without a doubt Spice and Spice World where their most successful albums. The Spice Girls where untouchable, men wanted them and girls wanted to be them. In the late '90's girls were chanting "Girl Power." The five-some made it clear that they were independent and that no man would run their lives.
When Geri's nude pictures were found by the media the girls remained close. It's in late '97 when things started getting out of hand. They dropped their manager Simon Fuller shortly before their much anticipated film debut Spice World(released Dec. 26, 1997). By this time, their sophomore album "Spice World" was out but stayed put on the number three spot. "Spice Up Your Life" and "Too Much" where chart-toppers in various countries including the US. Their third single, "Stop", didn't do well as expected. In May of '98 the future of the group was at stake when leader, Geri, announced that she had left the group.
Their fourth and first single without Geri, "Viva Forever", proved that they could still function without a leader. They left Geri's vocals in the song and the animated video had all five girls in it. Since it was the last single on that record they all began experimenting with solo careers.
In the year 2000, their last and first album without Geri entitled Forever enterd the charts with dissapointing numbers. The collaboration with top-notch producer Rodney Jerkins(Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez) was sure to make their album another smash hit. Unfortunately for them, that would be the last of the Spice Girls. After the group broke up, it was said that each Spice Girl was worth twenty million dollars. Though there's been rumors of a Spice Girls reunion, many wonder if that day will ever come.
