Deep within the discreet neighbourhoods of Ajax in Ontario, lingered an elite force of the world’s most distinct Punk-Rock bands around. Back in high school, the crazy Canadian foursome used to play in different bands and became rivals to each other. They began to join forces in 1996, 41 days into the summer, to spawn Sum 41 that included the ultimate vocals and guitar skills of Deryck Whibley (Bizzy D); the hard-core guitar of Dave Baksh (Brown Sound), the heavy bass strokes of Jason McCaslin (Cone) and the thrashing drum beats of Steve Jocz (Stevo 32). Jason got his nickname ‘Cone’ got his name in high school from eating an ice cream cone everyday at lunch.
Sum 41 later caught interest with Island Records, and set-up a deal in the December of 1999. Sum 41 released their first EP ‘Half Hour Of Power’ including the ultimate singles ‘Summer’ and ‘Makes No Difference’ that led them to super gigs with The Offspring, Blink 182 and Social Distortion and with all these major line-ups, Sum 41 quickly grabbed attention to fans in the millions but this was only the beginning…
After touring in 2001, Sum 41 later released ‘Fat Lip, ‘In Too Deep’ and ‘Motivation’ from the incredible album ‘All Killer No Filler’. The singles were very catchy and made the album a great success. Their whole originality with thriving punk rock and metal influences from Iron Maiden made their music popular for all ages.
After their exceeding tours, Sum 41 put their brains together to create another masterpiece, to follow up from their influential ‘All Killer No Filler’. Their latest album ‘Does This Look Infected?’ qualified to be their best album yet. It was home to the ultimate singles: ‘Still Waiting’, with the amusing video that takes a cheeky poke at ‘The Strokes’, and their hilarious video for ‘Hell Song’ where the preparation for a concert is in the hands of their Barbie dolls and action men and the live cover footage of ‘Over My Head (Better Off Dead’ at one of their energetic concerts.
So from being a champion recess fighter in elementary school, Deryck’s life has really had a huge turn around along with Cone, who I think has made a huge leap from an Usher in the movie theatre to a major rock star; as well as the poor basketball skills of Dave who has learnt that his best skills are at guitar; and then there’s Stevo 32, who got his nickname from his superstitions of athletes exceeding sports with the no. 32.
Throughout the years, Sum 41 have proven their worth to the world, and done a pretty good job of it too and still have on coming albums to please their fans.
