It was the most unquestionably eminent of all psychologists, Sigmund Freud, who coined the term SuperEgo. To him, this aspect of the personality governed many different features of the individual - most notably one's aspirations, desires and dreams; and is something that leads to an appreciation of the arts. Without a SuperEgo, therefore, one cannot fully realise what it is to feel.
This sentiment fully encapsulates the essence of the band. Bored and disillusioned by the insipid nightmare of music around them, SuperEgo have set out to recapture the original aim of songwriting - to make music that moves you to feel. As James Magee (keys and synth) put it, "We've got a message we want to get out there. We've got music that takes you on a journey." And after hearing their alternative indie rock, there's no turning back to the tiresome mediocrity of all the rest.
SuperEgo was formed back in 2000 and stayed together whilst they went to their various universities across the UK. Girlfriends came and went, but the guys stayed together simply because they knew they had something special. It wasn't until all had graduated some four years later that the drums and bass were dropped owing to musical differences. A frustrating couple of months ensued finding suitable replacements and getting them up to speed, but the band's comeback gig towards the end of 2004 was received with rapturous responses from fans and the media alike. Stronger than ever with new drummer Phil Hobgen, new bassist Antoine, label and management interest, new songs, a new self-produced EP and new music videos, SuperEgo are certain that 2005 is their year.
Award-winning singer/songwriter Ollie Barron was very clear about the aims of the musical unit. "I've got a fortune cookie message stuck to my guitar case. It says, 'a goal without a plan is just a wish'. We've got a plan, and it involves gigging hard, touring, getting our music out there, getting signed… and that's just the beginning."
Indeed, they won't stop there. These five musicians from Sussex have created something of intelligence and worth that begs analysis, and not some throwaway pop. Yet there's killer hooks around every corner, around every wave of awakening consciousness that drags you in, deeper into the music. Eric (lead guitar and effects) points out what the band does for each member, "It's a very cathartic experience. I treat my axes with contempt. You wouldn't call me a guitar-lover."
The songs have been described as everything from a cocktease to fucked-up revelations. The combined vocal talent, subtle keys & guitar effects and general songwriting ability plays a major role in shaping the staggeringly affective sound. There's an esoteric air about the group as they move onstage. Deep, meaningful lyrics provide an honest reflection of the band's feelings, a fleeting glimpse of what truly moves them. They're disturbing. They're unnerving. They're twisted. They're arousing. They say those who have reached the SuperEgo level have achieved the highest stage of psychosexual development. They quite clearly could benefit from Freud's help, but all they're gonna get from him now is a name and a nasty coke habit.
SuperEgo are...
Ollie Barron - likes the abstract-ness of the former, but prefers the darkness of the latter.
Ian Sillett - abuses guitars. If you love guitars you will hate him. If you think guitars are bitches, the devils child and mere portals to the inner soul where turmoil and anger rampage freely, then you will love him.
James Magee - the fingers of fury. Playing a mixture of rhythm and lead over 88 notes of pure plastic lovin', watching these keys in action will leave you bewildered, bedazzled and betrothed.
Antoine - energetic, self-loving bassist who has lived and loved like no other. He lends his mystical and erotic talents, hitting the sub frequency notes with power, melody and grace.
Phil Hobgen - drives like a drummer, stings like a bee.
