Switchfoot is ever increasingly becoming known for their inspirational rock ballads. The band has been in the music industry for half a decade. They released three albums on an independent label, before releasing their biggest success, ‘The Beautiful Letdown’. Combine, these three albums (Legend of Chin, New Way to be Human, Learning to Breathe) have sold over 400,000 copies. Their latest album has just reached one million in record sells. They are currently headlining a sold out concert tour that stretches from March to September.
Switchfoot got its beginning on the beaches of San Diego in the mid 1990’s. Jon and Tim Foreman met Chad Butler through their interest in surfing. All three competed in National surfing contests and received endorsement deals from major equipment companies, but soon came to realize that their true calling was music. The threesome decided to form a band. The bands name ‘Switchfoot’ is taken from a surfing term. The three practiced for months in a garage, and finally hit the road. After touring for a short time they were signed to the independent record label re:Think records. Their first album, ‘Legend of the Chin’ was released in 1997. They released to other successful albums on this label. Shortly after recording ‘The Beautiful Letdown’, the band was signed to Columbia records. After the release of ‘The Beautiful Letdown’, the band received critical acclaim for the musical talent.
Swicthfoot could be labeled as Adult Alternative or a Christian Rock band. But the band seems to disagree. “We’ve never fit in any of the genre boxes,” says Foreman. “I think that diversity is our strength.” Either way, the band has experienced much success. Their influences include Police, James Taylor, The Beatles, and Stevie Wonder.
Switchfoot’s accomplishments are vast and varied. Their music has appeared on popular TV shows such as ‘Regis and Kelly’, ‘Dawson’s Creek’, and ‘Felicity’. They have performed on ‘Last Call with Carson Daily’ and ‘Late Late Show with Craig Kilbourn.’
