SXX has been living the classic line "It's a long way to the top if you want to rock and roll!" The band's hard rock songwriting and performance has developed intensely over the years from their early days crisscrossing Michigan in a rusty Ford van. The Battle Creek, Michigan band has independently released four CD's, contributed songs for television soundtracks, advertising, and benefit compilations since 1999. They continue to perform and record as often as possible and are currently writing songs for a new CD.
SXX packs a hard rock punch to their live shows. Rich Nuyen (Lead Vocals, Bass), Jeff Weers (Electric Guitar, Vocals), and Shawn Rainer (Drums, Vocals) not only have technical proficiency and commanding stage presence, the band’s style marks a return to big rock choruses, thought provoking lyrics, and vocal harmonies. Audience response has been great, and rock clubs are pleased with the band’s draw, attitude, and musicianship.
The band began as Bad Oscar in the summer of 1999, writing songs and performing live wherever they could. Limited Live was their first independently produced CD released in late 1999, followed by Defining Moments in 2000 and 3 more in 2002. The band also recorded a cover of "Calling To You" for the Robert Plant tribute Plant Waves in 2003. Original bassist J.K. left the group just prior to the band renaming themselves SXX. Rich then took on both lead vocals and bass guitar.
In 2004 SXX teamed up with fellow Michigan rockers SonaKofa and Gabriel Burns for the original Triple Threat Tour which hit rock clubs in Michigan and Indiana throughout the summer. The band also released their critically acclaimed CD Big Tips And Hats and continued performing in support of the disc through 2005 and 2006. Highlights include performing the Cereal City Cycle Fest in 2005 and opening for 90's rockers Jackyl in 2006.
The latest chapter in SXX brings new guitarist Jeff Weers into the lineup, he has been playing in the Michigan band scene since the early 90's, his influences are blues, rock, and metal. Original guitarist and founding member Phil Wiswell stepped down from performing with the band in late 2006 and is currently working on his own projects.
Currently the band is booking shows for spring and summer 2007 as demand for their live performances continues to increase. They’re also working on a CD of all new material and shopping for independent labels and distribution. Check out SXX live, on CD, or on the Internet as they continue to record and perform live now and into the future!
