The meaning of Chop Suey!... Hi! I've finally got round to reading an article that a magazine published on SOAD a while ago, in which there is a quote from Daron explaining the meaning behind "Chop Suey!". I find this pretty interesting, because while I've always loved the lyrics for their sheer eeriness, I've never really been able to interpret or understand them.
Daron says: "(Chop Suey) is about how people view death. For example, if I died of a drug overdose everyone would say I deserved to die because I took drugs. Hence the line '...angels deserve to die'. It's not a song that's anti or for anything, but more of an observation or an attempt to capture these strange feelings people have."
And suddenly it all makes sense!

Well, actually, not all of it. I'm still not entirely sure what that has to do with wanting to put your make-up on... :P
But then, I guess if there wasn't some element of the random then it wouldn't be classic System...! | spottyslippers |
that is a very confusing song but now it makes sensce! thanks! | doodoo11 |
eeeeeeee
the song is really cool, but the clip....
it sux, actually
if I were the director of C S! clip, I would show the video about suicide as it's told in the song.
but not soad fans watching SOAD!!!!
[I'm jealous, yeah :)] | dART |
I agree, I actually didn't think the video was that great either. It's an epic song (particularly the last chorus), it should have had an epic video. | spottyslippers |
SOAD also said that u shouldnt try to interpret their songs becuz every1 has their own view. SOme peoples idea of the song is that its about Christ's death. | mesmerise |
He says "I cry when angels deserve to die" not... "Angels deserve to die"... So your wrong on that bit...hmmm.... What does he say after he says "Why dont you put on a little make-up"? | Synai |
i have heard that chop suey is about martys (not sure about spelling) Like the line "Father why have you forsaken" me and the line "trust in my self rightous suicide" | mirrorinthebathroom |
'He says "I cry when angels deserve to
die" not... "Angels deserve to
die"... So your wrong on that
bit'
Hence the dots before "...angels", which suggests there are lyrics preceding it. I copied straight from the magazine; it's Daron's exact quote. Though I'd previously heard the martyr theory too. | spottyslippers |
| thank you! | newfan |
| That's okay :-) | spottyslippers |
what i want to know is what he says in the very beginning before the drums start when the drumme is banging the sticks together | who_cares |
| something like 'rolling suicide.' | SOADfreak |
I think he says "We're all in suicide" but i dunno.... | Metalrocker |
I believe he says, "We're rolling 'Suicide'", which is of course what the song was originally called. | spottyslippers |
| alright thatnks | who_cares |
it doesn't matter what the song means its fuckin awesome!! | somedude |
Sure it matters as fans we want and deserve to find deeper meanings in the songs we like therefore we can connect on a small level with the artists themself. | Captain_Feces |
That's what I think! ^
Though I must agree with the fuckin' awesome bit too... :-) | spottyslippers |
| Agreed then! | Captain_Feces |
| ya i agree 2 | bobbi_greenday |
Don't interpret in their songs, just try to see it as the last real "Poetry" in the world.
That's what i think. | Herman |
it really depends on whether the song is worth finding the real meaning to. i wouldnt bother trying to find meaning in slipknots lyrics, because corey taylor doesnt write good lyrics. | SOADfreak |
I agree. I always think System are the sort of band where you have to look into the lyrical meanings to understand the message that they're trying to convey.
For example, "Cigaro": "My cock is much bigger than yours" can be taken in a sexual manner, but the band wrote it to show the attitude of governments in today's society. It's criticizing the way they compare weapons and the size of their army; how one government can call their plight a "war" and not "terrorism" just because they have a bigger army. (That was Daron's explanation of it early last year).
I think that's why it's important to look into the lyrics. :-) | spottyslippers |
hey man what is the deal you forgot to write system...... of a down. ahhhhhhhhhhh | Captain_Feces |
you know what iv noticed, system is known for being a politicale band but they have only like 4 songs about the goverment | PigBenis |
They actually comment on social rather than political issues...but I suppose the two link to a large degree. | spottyslippers |
| And I'm not a man! :P | spottyslippers |
| what the hell? | SOADfreak |
Were you talking to me, SOADfreak?
All I meant was, Captain_feces called me "man"... | spottyslippers |
| oh, i see. | SOADfreak |

i apologize for calling you a man. My bad. I didnt mean as "man" in general but just a statemant like hey man stop eating my soup. You know well w/e srry! | Captain_Feces |

Wake up, (Wake up)
Grab a brush and put a little make-up,
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up,
(Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up)
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?
Here you go create another fable.

Grab a brush and put a little make-up,
(You wanted to)
Hide the scars to fade away the shake-up,
(You wanted to)
Why'd you leave the keys upon the table?

Why I don't think you trust,
In my self-righteous suicide,
I cry when angels deserve to die.
Wake up, (Wake up)

Oh!
Trust in my self-righteous suicide,
I cry when angels deserve to die,

perhaps when he says father he means god?
i don't know, i'm not a fan, i don't think i've ever even heard the song before, or any of their songs.
oh well, just thought you might want the lyrics for the song you're talking about.
you're welcome | lilith |
Well i've ever thought he means god, if not i'd be disappointed ;)
i think, he means that nobody believes he's gonna be dead,(whoever he sings bout the first part, probably this person doesnt care of what hes said - that hes gonna kill himself - ,he/she even bothers more about the keys he/she left on the table.
but i dunno, im an german n00b so... | Herman |
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Maybe the Father part is about God,Its really hard to said. My question is why is the song called Chop Suey away? But luv the song. | pscyho |
it was originally called Suicide but for reasons unknown they changed it to Chop Suey! If you listen closely just before the song starts you can distinctly hear Serj say 'We're rolling suicide' if you want proof. | mesmerise |
Those are two different quotes that are attributed to Jesus at the time he died on the cross. They appear in different books of the Bible. In the one quote, Jesus is accepting his death, and in the other one he is accusing his 'father' of abandoning him. The different quotes seem like they might contradict each other, since they give different accounts of the way Jesus viewed his own death - which would fit with the idea that the song is about the different ways people interpret or view death, no? | TheRezJhonn |
What a coincidence, I read the very part of the bible yesterday. | SOADfreak |
no ppl the meaning of chop suey is 2 be awesome!!!!!!!! | Pieman4ever |
| soad rox mutherfukers daron is my hereo | daron_malakian_rox |
i heard someone say, "there is a meaning behind the part in the video where serj and the ppl behind him r eating chop suey..its not meant to make u laugh..if u really loved the band u'd kno"...can ny1 inform me of that meaning..cuz i dont see wat eating chop suey would mean...so it would be greatly appreciated if some one would tell me wat that meant..thanx.. :-] | stairway2heaven |
watch the language there daron lover.etc..jk hehe..:-P | stairway2heaven |
it is something that has nothing to deal with the text and its meaning, but yesterday i had "Chop Suey" for dinner - some kind of Chinece food... made of fish. I found it strange ... | unforgiven |
why were they eating chop suey,, uummm let me think uuuhhhh BECAUSE THE SOONG IS CALLED CHOPSUEY AND THE BAND IS SYSTEM OF A DOWN, the band that also brought you the song about bananas and terracota pie. its obviously just their for fun | FattyMcfatfat18 |
Father into your hands,
I commend my spirit,
Father into your hands,
Why have you forsaken me,
In your eyes forsaken me,
In your thoughts forsaken me,
In your heart forsaken me,
This part is extracted from the bible, it is what Jesus was to have said to God when he was hanging from the cross.
So i somewhat think that it has a religous background. | Scarcella |
thanks i thought he was taliking about religon or never mind because it is way off the only reason i eat chop suey from my aunt chinese resturant i'm half chinese is because of that song. why have you have forsaken me is the line i mostly say when i get in big trouble | NYC_rock_yknowme |
at some point, it HAS to be about the death of Christ, because it says... "Father into your hands, i commend my spirits, father, into your hands, why have you forsaken me?" which is Christ's last words before he died on the cross | angelcutiee001 |
