| ‘Four guys, a rental van, a river and a lie’
That’s how things began for THE TALK in 2002. They had just become a band and someone wildly suggested touring out to California and back. “Why the hell not” they said, so on their own, the enterprising young band called up clubs and booked some dates. The only thing left to do was to rent a van, but therein lied a problem; one that almost derailed their grand plans.
“We discovered that the mere fact that we were going to drive across the Mississippi River would basically double the rental rate for the van,” explains band singer Justin Williams. “With the low dough gigs we had set up there was no way we could afford it. So to get the rate down to something we would be able to pay, we told the rental company that we were a church group and were just heading to Memphis.”
So how did they explain to the rental company the 7000 miles they tacked onto the van?
“We said the church event was so successful they wanted us to come back for more,” Drummer Jeremy Hollcomb chimes. “It was our religious duty to oblige.”
Well, a church group they are not. That’s for sure. But one may say their devotion to music is quite religious, and much like their fictional church band, people have been demanding more from THE TALK.
‘Under 24 Hours’
That’s how long it took to record No, You Shut Up!, and while the band did it that way because it was all the studio time they could afford, they wouldn’t have had it any other way – at least not for their first album.
Says Williams: “Even if we had the money I don’t think we’d want to spend any more time on this album. To me, doing it in one day gave it more legitimacy. It’s 100% guts with no bells and whistles…just straight from the heart rock ‘n’ roll. The songs were ready to go and there
was no need to fuss over them.”
‘Somewhere in Nebraska’
That’s where they recorded their next album. The exceptional Mike Mogis, who you know from his work with Bright Eyes, has signed on to produce. They’re actually recording the album in the summer before the release of No, You Shut Up!.
“I guess a lot of things we do are done fast – our songs, touring so soon, recording a second album and such,” contemplates Werner.
About Mike Mogis: “What can we say about Mike? He's super nice, talented, creative, and a pleasure to work with,” says Williams.
‘Tastefully fast’
It may be one way to sum up The Talk’s approach to music.
“If there is one thing this band is concerned about, it is taste. No matter how fast or raunchy our music is it's all about melody and lyrics that flow. There is a lot to live up to having Superchunk, Polvo and the Archers of Loaf all spawning here.”
Indeed, like their North Carolina rock predecessors, THE TALK want to make records they would actually buy and listen to.
"It's really hard to warm up to a new band when you already have all these old bands you love and support,” says Williams. “I guess we just want to try and change that for ourselves and hopefully others as well."
And no doubt they will. |
