Tamia Washington was born on May 9, 1976 in the projects of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Tamia was born to a seventeen year old mother, and growing up; she rarely saw her father. By age six, the singer began singing in her local church’s choir. She soon became interested in singing, dancing, and acting. As she grew older, she performed in local theatrical presentations. In 1993, Tamia won the YTC Vocal Achievement Award. In 1994, she won the Steve Ross Music Scholarship Award at the American Academy Annual Salute to excellence. That same year, the young singer attended a party held by her manager, Brenda Richie, for singing sensation, Luther Vandross. While at the party, Tamia met singer, Quincy Jones. Jones immediately realized the young star’s talent and had her sing, “You put A Move on My Heart,” which he put on his new album, Q’s Jook Joint. The single became atop ten on the R&B Billboard Charts and earned Tamia a Grammy nomination for best R&B Vocal Performer. In 1995, Tamia recorded the single, “Missing You,” with fellow singers, brandy, Gladys Knight, and Chaka Khan for the Set It Off soundtrack. The song was nominated for a Grammy. In 1997, Tamia appeared in a small role for the film, Speed II: Cruise Control, starring Keanu Reeves. She also appeared on the film’s soundtrack with the single, “Make Tonight Beautiful.” In April 1998, Tamia released her debut, self-titled album. The album featured artists such as Jermain Dupri, Keith Crouch, Tim Kelly, Bob Robinson, Mario Wynans, and Quincy Jones. In 2000, the young singer signed to Elektra Records. That same year, she released A Nu Day. The album, which featured Missy Elliott, went Gold status. Soon after, Tamia released Stranger In My House. She then took some time off to raise her baby. In mid-2003, Tamia’s album, Still will be released. The album features tracks: “Mr cool,” “It’s A Party,” “No Way,” and the singer’s favorite song, “Smile.” Tamia co-wrote singles, “Whispers” and “Don’t Ask Why,” with Peter Lord and Jeff Smith. The song, “Officially Missing You,” is the album’s first single. Still was produced by Babyface.
