T.A.T.U. has caused much controversy and outrage in the last two years. What would won expect when you place two young teenagers in see through clothes and have them kiss throughout their music video. The group was the brain child of former commercial producer Ivan Shapovalov. Back in 2001, Shapovalov held open auditions at Moscow’s Mostfilms Studios. After seeing hundreds of thousands of girls he picked Julia Volova and Elena Katina. The producer immediately began to construct a way to put the Russian band into mainstream America. On May 16, 2001 the two girls signed a deal with Universal records Russia. They were only fifteen and sixteen years old. Despite the two girls having boyfriends, they were marketed as lovers. Their first single, “I’ve Lost My Mind,” depicts the two kissing throughout the video in the pouring rain. The single was in the top ten for two months in Russia and in the top five most requested songs for three months. The girls second single, “They’re Not Gonna Get Us,” was in the top ten in Russia and peaked at number seven in the United States. The band has caused much controversy due to the marketing. Rather than focusing on their music, they focus on sexuality. Their success in the United States has proven that sex does sell.
