Ted Nugent was born on December 13, 1948 in Detroit, Michigan. Inspired by '50s rock 'n roll like Elvis Presley, he taught himself to play the guitar at the age of 8. As a teen, he played in a couple of bands, the Royal Highboys and Lourds, but his time with them ended when he moved to Chicago in 1964. In Chicago, Nugent went on to form the Amboy Dukes, who soon went from garage band to popular hard rock. As the band gained popularity, so did Ted Nugent. As band members left, he became the frontman for the band. In 1974, Ted renamed the band to Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes. They released thier first two albums on DiscReet records. In 1976, Ted left the band to assume a solo career. Derek St. Holmes, Rob Grange, and Cliff Davies joined with Ted to form Ted Nugent and Free For All. Both bands were highly popular hard rock bands at the time. Ted Nugent live, however, is what made him such an attraction. His live shows were so great and so often, that fans would often hear him live more than on a disc. Ear piercing guitar riffs and a "if it's too loud, you're too old" motto and his wild man image depicted Ted Nugent. His most popular songs "Cat Scratch Fever" and "Motor City Madness" made Ted an icon. In 1989, Ted formed with Tommy Shaw, (Styx) Jake Blades, (Night Ranger) and Michael Cartellone to form the supergroup Damn Yankees. When the group was put on hold for awhile in 1994, Ted resumed his solo career and produced his first album in seven years. The unorthodox guitarman is still going in the new millenium and has recently released a live contemplation.
