Tempo House were formed in Edinburgh in 1984. Named after the Fall track, their post-punk sound was influenced by that band, and others such as Echo and The Bunnymen, Doll By Doll and The Clash.
However, with their twin guitar sound (no keyboards, unlike most of their contemporaries in the New Romantic landscape of the time), they echoed American bands such as Television and The Only Ones, especially as their live set included a version of ‘Another Girl, Another Planet’.
The tracks featured on this site comprise the only demo recordings that the band made. Recorded on 2nd January 1985, it is a good reflection of their distinctive style of big drum sound, powerful bass, melodic lead guitar lines and evocative lyrics.
They gigged in the Edinburgh area in 1985, but the usual musical differences and external influences led to them splitting up later that year.
Unfortunately, no photographs of the band are known to exist.
After the split, Bill Carlyle did not play with any other bands, except for a one-off reunion gig with one of his previous bands, Theme, in 2000. He continues to work in the computer industry.
Richard Paterson also decided to end his music career at this point. He has since worked on many television documentaries as a freelance cameraman and soundman, travelling extensively over Europe.
Contact was lost with Dave Bathgate and Dave Flockhart. If you have any information about them, or Tempo House, that could be included here, please get in touch via the Tempo House home page on this site.
