Ten Foot Pole started off as Scared Straight, with album on the label Mystic, Ten Foot Pole got signed onto Epitaph, staying there until past the millennium. Dennis Jagard grew up in California. At the age of 8, he was forced to take piano lessons; at the age of 10, music was his way of life. "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath was one of his favorite songs. One he'd play every time he took for a shower for months.
When Dennis was 11, he had his parents sign a contract. He would could switch from piano to guitar with the understanding he would turn the volume down when told, and he would not play the guitar when his father was home. Jagard started playing at areas like parks during middle school, motivated by their love for hardcore music and the hope that popular girls would notice them if they were performing onstage.
The group gained experience at every turn as they took their new band, Scared Straight, on their first tour. They lost everything they had when their trailer and car were stolen in Pittsburgh. The shows continued as they kept playing, but on borrowed equipment. Scared Straight self-released their first record in early 1994. Burns switched bands and went with Corrosion Of Conformity. By September of that year, the Epitaph label had signed the band and released Rev.
May 2000 found the band on the Punk-O-Rama, providing a joyous interaction with fans. The group covered "Love Song" by Tesla (a 1980s song) on Punk Goes Metal, released in August of 2000 by Fearless Records. That month, in San Diego, tragedy struck Ten Foot Pole: bassist L. Lawson unexpectedly died of an enlarged heart. Feeling sick, Leigh laid down and never woke up. Tests revealed his death wasn't caused by substance abuse. In tribute to Lawson, the band canceled its tours and took time off.
John Chapman, their new bass player, joined the band before Ten Foot Pole came back. Ten is no longer on Epitaph Records, but still enjoy putting on shows, having shared the stage over the past fifteen years with bands like Circle Jerks, Green Day and The Offspring. Ten Foot Pole had laid a strong foundation of experience, devoted fans, and intelligent, thoughtful lyrics based on the desire to have a good time.
