bravo, bravo.
now lets work on getting some posts on the horrorpops, mad sin, nekromantix, 12 step rebels, and demented are go forums.
support those lonely old psychobilly bands! | shadowbug26 |
Now how in the heck can I support those other forums? It cost me like $25 to get the TA cds and now you want me to rob a bank so I can go get a couple of cds from another 10 psychobilly bands!!!
How do you get their music? Surely you don't buy all those cds do you? Do you share them with friends, like they burn one for you from their copy or what? Downloads?
Or are you independantly wealthy and have these bands flown into your private club to perform just for you?
Tell me how you all get into so much music without going broke!!! | GrayBeard |
I just go broke. Though, I've recently discovered MySpace (several months after everyone else did!), so I've taken to downloading whatever music I can from there as well. I was kind of averse to downloading music without paying, but many of my favourite artists have said that they don't actually mind if people do that, so I may start doing so... | spottyslippers |
share with friends?! ha! none of my friends like psychobilly on their own. if they do, its because i forced the cds on them. hehe.
no, i download. shhh. but if i really like the band, i will buy their cd. i have bought every tiger army cd...and i just bought the new horrorpops cd the day it came out (ps, its awsome!). plus, i have a job, and work quite a bit, and dont have to pay a lot of bills, so i do have extra spending money. yep..and then theres christmas and birthdays...haha.
but unless you live in cali or some other area with a big psycho scene, your best way to get psychobilly cds is to download or order the cds from the internet. | shadowbug26 |
Well I don't do any downloading because I use MSNTV and with my old system I can't. I have to listen 2 music the old fashion way: buy the cd.
So how about a suggestion on what should be the next band I should listen to. Hopefully it will be a band that both of you (Becca and Chan) like so that you can both guide my listening education!!!
So, what band do you two suggest? | GrayBeard |
um, if youre looking for good sounding psychobilly, id go with Mad Sin's "Survival of the Sickest" or the Nekromantix's "Return of the Loving Dead"
if youre just looking for some fun music, id say go with the Horrorpops' "Hell Yeah" or "Bring it On" or anything by Lars Frederikson and the Bastards
yeah...those are my suggestions for now. | shadowbug26 |
I'll back Becca up on the Nekromantix and HorrorPops albums, particularly the HorrorPops. Not being greatly into psychobilly I haven't actually heard Mad Sin, so I'll go and check that one out myself.
I personally don't enjoy Lars Frederiksen and co; the topics they sing about don't really appeal to me. But it's all a matter of opinion.
I'm sorry, I can't really add any more to that guide. As I said, I'm just discovering psychobilly myself, so I haven't heard a great deal of the bands that are around. | spottyslippers |
yeah...lars songs have some dumb topics, but theyre fun. theyre not psycho or even rockabilly at all. but theyre still great rock.
yeah! yeah! get mad sin. good times..good times... | shadowbug26 |
I am leaning towards Mad Sin right now since I want to explore this psychobilly stuff some more, and also because they seem to get Becca REAL excited!!! Maybe TOO excited!!!
Did you check them out Chan? What did you think?
The second is that Horrorpops band since they have ben mentioned a lot to me recently.
Now has either of you heard of Bullets and Octane and particularly their "The Revelry" cd? This was recommended to me this week. | GrayBeard |
hmm, havnt heard of that. i'll try to remember to download them.
mad sing are great. and..and...their bass has lights on it! its fricken awsome. haha.
and one of the reasons ive been mentioning the horrorpops a lot is because their new cd just came out on the 13th, and im seeing them on oct 8th. so..yeah..and plus, theyre good :-) | shadowbug26 |
I've only heard one song from the new Horrorpops' CD so far, and it was brilliant. Their first album was great, too. So much fun.
I have heard of Bullets and Octane, but I've never heard their music. That'll be another one to look up!
No, I forgot to see if I could find any Mad Sin. I will do that as soon as I've finished on iSound. | spottyslippers |
did you hear Where You Can't Follow? they released that early...
that song is mad good..but you know what the great thing is? its far from the best on the cd. Im partial toward Walk Like A Zombie, Crawl Straight Home, S.O.B, and Freaks in Uniform. yeah, those are my favorites for the week... | shadowbug26 |
Well I got the HorrorPops "Bring It On" cd today and I AM HOOKED!! I just spent a couple of hours on their iSound site doing posts to get it reving up and did a review of 2 songs and my new favorite female singer Patricia Day!! | GrayBeard |
Yeah, it was "Where You Can't Follow". I didn't know they'd released it, it's very hard to get hold of ANY info on them.
I want this album now! I'll have some money by Friday, I might treat myself... | spottyslippers |
| aw, yay! 2 new horrorpops fans! | shadowbug26 |
Yay! Well, I kind of already was, I had "Hell Yeah"...but yeah, I shall now officially count myself as a fan! | spottyslippers |
Oh balls, I'll correct that. Replace "had" with "heard all of". My brain and my fingers aren't properly connected today, I keep writing something that's completely different to what's in my head. | spottyslippers |
*had heard all of
Ha, got there in the end! | spottyslippers |
There r probably tons of fans of both TA and HorrorPops on iSound but never make it to their forums or they came and saw nothing before and never came back.
Maybe with some postings here now the fans will come.
I used to like the old BandHunt thingy that had a "Fan Of" click with each band that listed all the bands fans on BandHunt. They didn't put that on iSound, at least I cant fine it anywhere. | GrayBeard |
theres probably a few fans...but i was the one that added Tiger Army and the horrorpops to isound (as well as the nekromantix, mad sin, and demented are go....isound was a pretty psychobilly free place before i got here :-P ) | shadowbug26 |
I couldn't get hold of any Mad Sin. I may have to resort to downloading! | spottyslippers |
Bravo for you Becca for going thru the hassle of adding bands. I did that two times and that was enough for me!!!
Chan, you must live in a place even more remote than WE do!! Even Yuma Arizona had a Mad Sin cd.
Then again, maybe Yuma has way more hip underground than I think. That would explain why so many young ppl always come up to Sandi and rave over her pink hair and cool outfits.
Gee, and I thought it was a sleepy little farm town. | GrayBeard |
ive never found a mad sin cd where i live...
i tell you, downloading, its a beautiful thing. | shadowbug26 |
Swindon isn't actually sleepy at all, it's a huge town that the idiot council keep appealing to have turned into a city! I think the UK as a whole is very behind on music, particularly the underground stuff. You can get hold of the more popular underground albums such as AFI's earlier works and the Hellcat compilations (at extortionate prices, might I add), but finding stuff for artists such as the Nekromantix, Mad Sin and even the HorrorPops is very difficult. | spottyslippers |
Wow!! I always thought that the UK lead the way in alternative music!!
And u cant find Mad Sin stuff where you live Becca!
Now I am beginning to think Yuma Arizona is the "IN" place for alternative music!!!! I would never have imagined!!!
Maybe Sandi & I should seriously start a club for teens here to have some live music. I wonder what such a club would be?
Any Ideas? Suggestions? | GrayBeard |
We do actually have good bands, but they just re-hash the sounds of the orginal punk bands in the '70s and '80's. Any newer bands I listen to tend to be from foreign countries (which includes the US for me, of course!).
I reckon that live music clubs should do a different genre per night: indie one night, metal another etc. They should also be resonably priced. My local club plays host mostly to teenagers, though people of all ages do go - the atmosphere is friendly enough. But it's way overpriced: it used to be free if you bought a drink, but since then it's become popular and now they've hugely raised the price.
The sad thing is, most people who go there seem more intent on showing off how cool they are or whatever than actually listen to the music. Though to be fair, it's not big enough: sometimes there's not enough room to get near enough the stage to listen to the music up close.
| spottyslippers |
theres a few small venues for teens and such around where i live...but i think the closest one is like, 40 minutes away.
my favorite one has one room for a stage and dancing/viewing area, a room with pool tables, and a room with a bunch of couches so that when theres a band you dont want to see, you can just hang out with friends. mostly young, local bands play at the venues like that, but occasionaly you get some bigger ones (horrorpops, the unseen, the casualties, lost city angels, big d and the kids table, lucky boys confusion, bleed the dream, roger merit and the disasters, street dogs, the matches, etc).
yeah, if youve got a large population of bored teenagers in yuma, i think you could definitly get a lot of business with a little venue | shadowbug26 |
I wish we had separate rooms. We're crammed into one room at ours, so there is not only no space for a proper moshpit (bystanders often get dragged into it if they want to or not) but also a lack of fresh air: it's hell if you're a non-smoker. We have two tiny stages, and one of them usually doubles as a stand for the pool table. The place could really do with expanding.
So, that would be a good tip. Make sure it's big enough!
Is it easy just to set up a business like that?! Well, it's a good idea, anyway. | spottyslippers |
OK, now for details details details. The more the better
Now just to let u know, Sandi & I were business developers helping businesses grow. So this info that u both have will be useful bigtime to us if we do this.
How many ppl does the club hold?
Is there a cover charge to enter and how much?
Do they serve food and what kind at what price?
What kind of beverages do they serve and how much do they charge?
What kind of supervision is there in terms of adults and security?
What kind of hours do these clubs have?
Is there a full range of ages at the club, say 12 - 20 or more limited, say 16-18? Does the club limit the ages?
Is there some kind of rules set, like a dress code (boo) or no gang colors?
Do ppl show up even when there is no band playing just to hang out?
U both mentioned pool tables, are there other games to play such as pinball or video games? Is there a charge for this?
Ok, that's a lot of questions. We have a lot more but these will get the major ones answered. | GrayBeard |
Hey, wouldn't that be something if we did this, it got real big, and Becca set up her tattoo & piercing parlor in the club and Chan did all the band bookings and we started popping these clubs all over the place, maybe even all over the world, and become like the McDonalds of teen clubs, and so influential in the alt music industry that all kinds of bands would come to tour our clubs and we would be like the OZZFEST or WARPED tour except everything would happen in our clubs area and our clubs would generate so much revenue that we could set up charities to help fix the environment, help abused kids, and fund some startup bands, and set up a scholarship for kids to go to music school.
And then we would all be sitting there and saying "Damn, you remember when we started this idea back in '05 on the TA forum!!!"
| GrayBeard |
Ah, fantasies. :)
Though, it wouldn't be good to become the MacDonalds of music clubs. That place is EVERYWHERE. You can go to the remotest little country and there's a Maccy D's. It's global domination. The alternative music scene might not appreciate that! | spottyslippers |
But I do like the charities idea!
Okay, now some answers:
How many ppl does the club hold?
*More than my local does! 100-150? I don't really know how many people show up to these types of things, I'm rubbish at estimates. I like small intimate clubs, just not ones where there's no room to move!
Is there a cover charge to enter and how
much?
*How much is a Gilman card, $2-$5? Something like that. Membership's a good idea, my local costs £4-£6 every time you go and it's totally unaffordable.
Do they serve food and what kind at what
price?
*I don't know...do you need food at a club? Maybe snack food?
What kind of beverages do they serve and how
much do they charge?
*Alcoholic and non-alcoholic. No idea of charge (you might be able to tell Maths isn't my strong point!) Cheap enough so everyone can afford it, being thirsty at a club is not fun.
What kind of supervision is there in terms of
adults and security?
*Ug! At ours, there is no security, only people who work on the bar and stand at the door taking money. They were serving alcoholic drinks to minors before they were caught by the police. I was there when it happened, some drunk tried to steal the policeman's hat from his head when he was looking the other way!
What kind of hours do these clubs have?
*Mine is either 7-11PM or 8-11PM. Even though they stamp your hand to show you've paid, you can't get back in once you've gone out for a breather. So you often have to stay there the full 3-4 hours to get your money's worth, which isn't the best.
Is there a full range of ages at the club,
say 12 - 20 or more limited, say 16-18? Does
the club limit the ages?
*I don't think there should be an age limit on how old people there should be, it's nice having a community of all ages. Though I think some of the younger kids shouldn't be allowed in, maybe those under 14 (I know that sounds young, but there are 14-year-olds who show up at ours when they're not supposed to; it doesn't cause any trouble). It might be cool to have a night for younger kids every week, say 12-14 year olds...
Is there some kind of rules set, like a dress
code (boo) or no gang colors?
*No! Boo indeed!
Do ppl show up even when there is no band
playing just to hang out?
*Not at ours, you can't get in. That would be cool, though it would have to be free or membership-based...
U both mentioned pool tables, are there other
games to play such as pinball or video games?
Is there a charge for this?
*Well, we can just use the pool table without charge (I think...I don't know whether I've ever actually used it!) Video games could be good, but you would have to be careful of vandalism. I think what Becca said about having such things in a separate room is a good idea. The stage should be in a different place to give room to those who are listening to the music/ moshing. It's more comfortable for everyone that way.
Ta-da! | spottyslippers |
Wow!!! Chan u r remarkable!! So thorough!!! and quick!!! So you must get all "A" grades in ur classes!!!!
We can't believe that the clubs are only open at night, and only when a band is playing. We would have thought like from lunch until midnight.
And when there is not a band playing we would have thought they would just be playing bunch of cds and hanging out. That seems like it would be fun. You know, a place to go just to listen to music and hang out and have a coke or something and just chill for a while with ur friends. | GrayBeard |
Chan, we are really surprised that some of the clubs you mentioned served alcoholic drinks and let ppl in under 21.
Here in the states, most clubs are like really strict about NOT letting anyone under the legal drinking age, which is 21 in most states, into establishments that serve alcohol, unless they are accompanied by their parents or guardian.
Maybe the UK is less anal about drinking than here.
We are pretty sure if we plan on letting teens in there is no way the "powers to be" would let alcohol be served. | GrayBeard |
I think the UK is a little more liberal when it comes to drinking laws. The reason most people go there is to hang out and get drunk; the music gets kind of sidelined. But of course, we can legally drink at 18 rather than 21, so letting in 16-year-olds is not so much of a problem because the age difference isn't as large.
Yeah, it would be nice if the club opened for a bit longer. Though I don't think the building actually belongs to the people who organise the alternative nights...they must have some sort of contract set up with the official owners, which may be why the club only opens on nights. | spottyslippers |
two of the tiger army shows ive been to served alchohol. but obviously they let people under 21 in. | shadowbug26 |
Becca, where were the TA shows? In a bar club, or did they have a set up bar in a concert hall?
Obviously they were not openly serving alcohol to minors, right?
Was there a lot of extra security or officials there to police the alcohol & minor thing, or was it kinda layed back, no big deal? | GrayBeard |
um, they were both in NYC, one was at Roseland Ballroom and one at BB Kings.
both had bars in them already.
i didnt see any extra security, mostly just guys for the dumb crowd surfers...
but overall they were both pretty laid back. especially the show at BB Kings (which was the show that TA headlined. the one at Roseland Social D headlined)
they didnt serve alcohol to anyone under 21...although i didnt really ask..im just kinda assuming. the bottles of water at BB kings were 4 fucking dollars though. total rip off. | shadowbug26 |
Becca u lucky devil!!! NYC is the BEST!!! If anyplace is laid back about clubbing it is NYC!!!
I spent 2 days a month there for many many years when the whole punk movement was coming out. I would go from street corner to street corner in Times Square at night and listen to the punk bands playing on the street with their single snare drum, and the bass and guitar and vocals going thru a little "pig" battery powered amp.
I would listen for a couple of songs, throw a couple of bucks in their guitar case and move on to the next band.
Do they still do that kind of street performance stuff there? | GrayBeard |
ive never seen a punk band street performance. theres always the saxaphone and guitar players, and various other instruments..but no punk bands...
none that ive seen anyway. | shadowbug26 |
Figures. Now punk bands are everywhere, they have venues now.
Back in the 70s & early 80s that was not the case, so they played the streets to get heard I guess.
I wish now I would have kept track of all their names as I am sure at least some of them made it. | GrayBeard |
