Tom Waits first entered the music scene in 1971 at the age of 17. He was known as a very smart boy. His first album came as a big surprise. The album, titled CLOSING TIME was the exact type of music as the title says. The music if the type that one would close a bar with; very low-key and mellow, with brilliant musics. The album, which had such hits as ''Ol '55', 'Ice Cream Man', and 'Old Shoes'. The album was recieved with wild acclaim for this bright new boy wonder. In later years, to keep his music alive, Tom came out with THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIHT in 1978. A song on the album, the same name as the title, is said to be his best ballad ever. Tom even started writing scores for films, to show people the genius of his music over the silver screen. Tom has always been regarded as a prophet of music, and a genius of lyrics and the ability to use strage objects, such as garbage can's or blenders, to make music, much like Pink Floyd.
Tom particularily combines his music with film director Robert Altman, and even starred in some of his films including Short Cuts.
Tom continued to make inspiring music in the 80s and 90s. Some hits were the albums RAIN DOGS, ALICE, and BONE MACHINE. BONE MACHINE was regarded as his most dark, loud, and morbid album yet, but full of truth and justice. It is in short, a masterpiece. Four years later, in 1996, his '92 masterpiece looked miniscule compared to the album which garnered Tom Waits 3 Grammy's for Best Album of the Year, Best Artist of the Year, and Best Record of the Year (Chocolate Jesus). The album, MULE VARIATIONS, is concidered by all, his greatest achievement and and absolute epic of an album with some of his greatest songs. Such songs as 'Big in Japan', 'Cold Water', 'Eyeball Kid', 'Chocolate Jesus' and 'Hold on' is considered his best ballad sicne 'The Heart of Saturday Night'.
Tom Waits continues to write movie scores, and is currently working on a new album. To many, Tom Waits may be an even bigger genius than Bob Dylan, which is quite an accomplishment. If you don't believe me, buy one of his albums...you won't be disappointed.
