Travis
This Scottish group first began as a joke in their hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. The members thought they would play once-in-awhile, but never venture to make music their career. Travis consists of Francis Healy (singer/songwriter), Andy Dunlop (guitar), Neil Primrose (drums), and Dougie Payne (bass). After the boys finished art school, they began to take Travis more seriously. In 1996, the re-located to London, England. That fall Travis released their debut EP, All I Wanna Do Is Rock, on their own Red Telephone Label. They caught the attention of Andy McDonald who used to work for Go! Discs. McDonald had heard Travis play before, and had wanted to sign the group when he was still working at Go! Discs, but has encountered problems with the organization’s parent company, PolyGram Records. By this time, however, McDonald had left the former company and created his own label, Independent Records. He desperately wanted to sign Travis. After negotiations, Travis became the first artists to sign to Independent Records. In 1997, Travis released their debut album, Good Feelings. The single, “U16 Girls,” did very well. The singles, “Happy,” and “Tied to the 90s,” were also in the UK top ten charts. In 1999, Travis released a darker album entitled, The Man Who. The album received mixed reviews. Although it has mixed reviews, the album still went six times platinum in the UK. The single, “Why Does it Always Rain On Me,” was top ten in the UK. Another hit single from The Man Who was “Writing to Reach You.” In 2000, the album was released in the United States. That same year, the group supported Oasis on concert tours. In June 2001, Travis released The Invisible Band. The album had the hit singles, “Sing” and “Follow the Light.” Travis then toured with Dido. In July 2001, Primrose has surgery on his upper vertebrae after he was injured in a swimming accident in France. In 2003, Travis released 12 Memories. The album received good reviews.
