Trent Reznor, whose full-name is Michael Trent Reznor, is one of the most fascinating and greatest artists of our time-span. I repeat myself: "He is one of the most fascinating and greatest artists;...and now wait for a minute to realize what these words could mean especially to yourself! Did you feel it???
In this biography I will try to show you a little bit of what Trent Reznor is! But one thing I can tell you right now: "Trent Reznor is Nine Inch Nails" , or should I say "Nine Inch Nails is Trent Reznor"!
Well, Trent was born on the 17th of May in 1965 in Mercer, Pennsylvania. His love for making music he found when he was only 5 years old, because of learning to play the piano. You have to see that he wanted to become a great concert pianist at this time, but at this time he could hardly know what opportunities in making music exist in this world. When he hit Highschool his interests tuned into rock'n'roll.
Then he knew: Music will be his future!!
Highschool was an interesting time for him, although he wasn't a very good student and had different interests than his friends. At this time he got his first synthesizer and he started to bring two of his interests into one - computers and music. When he realized that he could make music on computers he found a direction to his life.
Well, you have to see that Reznor started creating his own music after Highschool, but for sure it wasn't quite the same and he was fare away from being Nine Inch Nails. But he found a way! To persue this idea, he went to college to study computer engineering.
I guess Reznor had a different idea of what this sollege includes, because he didn't enjoy doing calculus all day. So he dropped out of college and started working at a studio , for sure at the beginning not as a vocalist of a band or creator of sounds; no, he cleaned toilets and was doing odd jobs no one else wanted to do, but because of that he also got the opportunity to spend time arround recording equipment.
So Reznor started his career in audio engineering. He taught himself the basic and after that he felt that he should test his ability to do some serious writings.
Can you imagine how it feels like to get plague by self-doubt, when you are on the right way to get what you allways wanted to have, and then, when everything is so near to you, so that you could touch it if you would try, you're getting frightened??
Well, that happened to Trent!! Why??
I gess that it is easy to explain without searching for an answer! I think that he was afraid to write, because Trent was allways a person who know what he liked and what he didn't like. At this time there came a new and unknown situation for him, because then he didn't know if what hi could create would be something he liked, and so he really got frightened!
He started to play keyboards in a bunch of bands, but the focus of the band had never been his vision. His purpose in life became spending every waking minute writing music and using the studio in which he worked at this time. That time was hard for him because he couldn't find his own band and because of that he wrote and recorded everything by himself.
1987 Reznor brought out a Demo-Version of "Down in it" and short time after that the band had gotten a flat-contract by the company TVT Records. Well, and after that it was going a little bit faster than before.
Because of troubles with TVT Records the band had to find a new company, which will public their new album. "Pretty Hate Machine" was born and at the same time the band created its name - "Nine Inch Nails". NIN are Trent Reznor, Charlie Clouser, Jerome Dillon, Robin Finck and Danny Lohner.
"Pretty Hate Machine" had the special touch of "wave" but this album also showed little Fragments of industrial sounds.
The band Nine Inch Nails took five more years until the next album was released, but you shouldn't forget about the different Remixes and EPs, which were released in the meantime.
In the year 1994 Reznor founded his own label: Nothing Records, and at the same year a new album was released: "The downward Spiral"!
Well, at this time the most popular song was "Closer", because the sound of this song exploded like a bomb. People had gotten crazy for this song.
This album, "The downward Spiral" broke every roul of musical ideas! Trent mixed up everything he founded: Different beats, which didn't/doesn't fit together, or upset guitars. It makes the sound of these songs special! This album was a great success for NIN! But, how it's normal for Reznor, it tooks years until a new life-proof came!
1997 the song "the perfect drug" was released on the soundtrack of David Lynchs' "Lost Highway"! Next to his own music Trent Reznor also produced Marilyn Mansons' "Antichrist Superstar"-Album and toured around with David Bowie. He also created the soundtrack to the movie "Natural born killers".
And you can imagine what now will come!!
YES, you've got it, everybody had to wait again!!!
So I gess, sometimes artist needs a little break to breath, but he is the only one, from whom you will not hear anything in this meantimes!
Allright, let go on!
At this time-span a lot of rumors went around about new Cds and other things. They got disturbed everytime again, until 1999 when MTV America made promotion for a new NIN-album. But the fans had to be patient until September 1999 when the album "The Fragil" was released. It wasn't quite the same success like "The downward Spiral", so criticers said, but the fans, who waited for so long time, were happy about the music on that cd. And you also have to notive that the world-tournee "Fragility" was sold-out and like everytime before Trent Reznor caught the mass!
2002 "And all that could have been" was released, which was the first live-album of Nine Inch Nails! With this album also a DVD of the tournee was produced. The sound of the Dvd is great and if you are the lucky owner of a surround system for your televison you will think that you're direct on the concert but the pictures jump around a little bit, what doesn't matters by the way.
I think this isn't just music, and everybody who listen at the moment to a NIN-song will understand what I mean, and will feel the same way like I do at the moment. But not only the founding of such a band can be fascinating. There is much more, what let you feel good knowing NIN and Reznor.
For example you should see by whom Reznor got influenced at the beginning. These were bands like David Bowie, David Lynch, Pink Floyd, Maynard James Keenan and Brian Eno. And, you see the connection between these bands: All of them are a part of the Label Nothing Studios.
Everybody, who listen to bands like them will also say that the Nothing Studios offers the best in annolog and digital recording in a non-corporate, musician-friendly environment. The studio is owned by John Malm and Trent Reznor how I told you before.
For sure sometimes there existed other sides, like people said Trent Reznor is on a trip of self-destruction or something else.
Well, maybe that's right, but first of all, sometimes a person needs such periods of life to find himself, and second if you read all articles about him and his art you'll see, that Trent Reznor is one of the few persons, who is in the big show-bizz, who loves making music. He gives a shit about being famous or rich, he only wants that persons feel the same way by listening to his music, how he feels by producing it, so they maybe will understand him and his art. Somtimes there are people, who wants to destroy such a work and the feelings, which are included on this work!
Trent Reznor enjoys being like himself and he likes his music, and this is it what you can feel by listening! He wants to ge connect with his fans when he is playing his music!
"...the feeling of being onstage and seeing people screaming your lyrics back at you - some form of connection that I think enriches peoples lives, in a way. And so it should be!..." so Trent Reznor in an interview!
