The Underclass are four young peasents from West Brom and Dudley. Bought together through a love of music and a lack of anything else to do.
The idea came about early in 2005. Simon and younger brother Mat wanted to start a band with a completley original sound. The line up was supposed to be Simon on drums, Mat on guitar and vocals and Mats girlfriend, Kirsty ($3 Box) on bass.
The idea was never put into practice and it fizzled out into nothing. Late May 2005 was the first time The Underclass got together with instuments. Mat on guitar, Simon on bass (who'd learnt to play bass about a week earlier) and Damien on drums (who Simon had taught the basics of drumming to about two days earlier) with Simon & Mat sharing vocal duties.
An extra member was added to the line up in august 05, Luke Holden was given the role of rhythm guitarist to allow Mat to concentrate on more lead work.
The bands name came from a song that they wrote about the class system.
The bands sound can't really be compared to any other band, due to the wide range of influences, which ranges from 60's power pop (The Who, Small Faces, Rolling Stones), 70's punk (Sex Pistols, The Ramones, The Clash) to modern day indie rock (The Libertines, The Paddingtons, The Strokes). Theyve been described as The Libertines playing Ramones tracks (a claim the band are very proud of!)
The band don't really care about mainstream success, in fact they don't care about success. There only reason for starting the band was for the love of the music. If one other person heres what they do and likes that they'll be happy.
BAND MEMBERS
Simon - Vocals & Bass. A former drummer who was taught bass guitar by Mat and a natural singer. Un organised and unreliablee he is the poser of the band and the one who makes sure they look cool. Also wriites lyrics.
Mat - Lead & Rhythm Guitar & Vocals. A very talented guitarist and the main writer in the band, he writes all the melodies and some lyrics. His simple but catchy guitar riffs are the main sound behind the band. Like his brother is unreliable and lazy but is an absolute ball of energy on stage.
Luke - Rhythm Guitar. The only rhythm guitarist in the world with no rhythm. But he has a natural gift for the instrument and could one day become a superb guitarist.
Damien - Drums. Taught to play drums by Simon and considering the short lenghth of time he's been playing is an excellent drummer. The sensible and organised one of the band. Writes some lyrics to. |
