Velvet8ball Biography
In the summer of 2003.Three guys formed the band velvet8ball. Christian Buhl the lead singer, was also functioning as the lead guitarist but he soon decided that he wanted to progress as a singer. So the band started looking for a 4th member to take care of the guitar. The missing link was soon found in Günes Kocak who blew the band away during his audition in November 2003. Because Günes was already a singer and a songwriter he was soon contributing to the bands creative process and enriching the bands sound on the vocal side with strong second vocals and harmonies. Christian, who thus far had been writing most of the bands material found a perfect partner in crime in Günes and the two of them began writing the new velvet8ball songs.
The band’s good friend and supporter, Robert Kinnerfelt then decided to manage and finance the making of the first velvet8ball demo "Smokescreen", which consisted of 9 songs, and was recorded and co-produced by Morten Hvid at "Bunker studio" in February and March of 2004. In that same period the band managed to play themselves into the Danish finals of, the international music contest "Emergenza".
During the following 6 months the band matured by playing a series of live shows. It was during this period that Christian and Günes started writing the new material, which would lay the groundwork for the velvet8ball sound, as we know it today. In early October 2004 the demo "Smokescreen was released. Then in late October 2004 drummer Claus left the band due to personal issues. That opened up a place for Kasper Gravesen, a childhood friend of Günes. Only a month after joining the band, Kasper was put to the test as the band played a gig at one of Copenhagen’s largest venues, Pumpehuset. Kaspers performance spoke for itself, cementing him as the new velvet8ball drummer.
In January 2005 the band decided to headhunt Erik Ottar Jensen, an old friend and former band colleague of Christian’s, from the up and coming band "Lanarose". Erik was desperately needed to fill the spot of Rasmus their old bass player who had been fired because he didn’t really burn for the emo-rock sound that the rest of the band wanted to convey. A sound, which Erik was more than willing to contribute to. With the new line-up the band really started coming together. Progress came fast and the band was truly rocked by the new quality sound that just seemed to be pouring out of them. The following months consisted of playing several live concerts, which took the band to venues in Poland and Sweden.
In late June 2005 velvet8ball had composed enough new quality material to be ready for a new demo recording but in the midst of planning, Christian decided to move to Brussels, Belgium due to personal reasons. Günes, Erik and Kasper were shocked because everything seemed to be moving in the right direction. After some initial conflict the band respected Christian’s choice, and there are no bad vibes between Christian and the band today.
In the aftermath of Christian’s sudden departure Velvet8ball was faced with a serious “Break up or move on” dilemma. Günes was determined to move on, and even though he didn’t want Christian to leave, it gave him the opportunity to take over as the bands lead singer. Erik on the other hand felt he needed to think things through. He had constantly been playing in serious bands for the last 5 years and felt he needed to reflect on where he really wanted to be. Günes and Kasper gave Erik the time and space he needed, and in the meantime Günes started writing new velvet8ball tracks such as the epic tune “hold on tight”. Fortunately Erik decided to return and join the rebuilding process of the band. The new velvet8ball line-up quickly found its missing link in guitarist Jacob Laulund who joined the band in October 2005. Jacob was, just like Kasper, immediately thrown into the fire by playing the major MusicZoo showcase in November 2005, one month after joining the band. In December 2005 velvet8ball recorded their second demo "Kept me blind" in "Bunker Studio" with Morten Hvid.
In January 2006 Erik went to Andujar, Spain. A decision he made right after Christian left. He was gone until May 2006. During this period the rest of the band started to promote velvet8ball. In this process Günes spread the word about Velvet8ball on the Internet, which soon proved to be a wise choice as the “myspace generation” quickly took notice of the cool new band from Copenhagen. As soon as Erik came back, Velvet8ball started playing gigs in all of Denmark. The band also started to play abroad again as Erik in August 2006 landed them a gig in Andujar. Furthermore the band returned to Gniezno, Poland to play two live concerts in November 2006.
The band is currently composing for their first official release and debut album. It's set to be recorded and released in 2007.
Velvet8ball is planning to push the boundaries of emotional rock and metal, so buckle up for an intense expansion of your sonic horizon in 2007!
