What About Chad are a four-piece outfit hailing from Surrey, South East UK. The band was originally formed less than 4 years ago by singer/guitarist Alex Fraser and bass player Nick Waple who, whilst seeking new ideas in July of 2002, went knocking at the door of their soon to be drummer, Carl Hastings.
The trio began to practice more and more regularly which soon developed into gigging around the South of England at venues ranging from London Astoria 2 (the Mean Fiddler) to student unions in Winchester and even the Isle of Wight. The constant gigging and practicing has helped develop the sound of What About Chad and create a marked improvement in demo recordings and musical ability. During the summer of 2005 What About Chad searched for something new to build upon this improvement and via the Internet, with an "off the cuff” message, clasped their destined second guitarist, Mario Anisko from Poland.
Now with a stronger line up What about Chad's already dynamic live show has been boosted by the presence of a second guitar. The commitment and energy shown in putting the music across has resulted in a bond with a rising fan base, especially online at the bands website, and music sites 'Myspace' and 'Purevolume’.
What about Chad were spotted on the Internet by producers based in London and over a six month period were able to focus completely on developing a unique sound, which in turn resulted in a growth spurt in the maturity of the song-writing. Having possibly stretched themselves musically and lyrically beyond what had been achieved in the past the band teamed up with the producers in February 2006 and went into the studios to record the latest EP titled after its first track "With Eyes Closed". Other tracks included "Less Talk More Sleep" and "Strangers".
The quartet seems to have shaped a new blend of "so called" pop punk, but with a unique difference. At points What About Chad's music contains elements of metallic like riffage and melodic charge but is not specifically emotional rock. Taking each band members influences and fusing these ideas together they have found a rich distinctive sound deriving from multi-layered power-pop rock, somewhat reminiscent of early 80's bands. This, fused with the modern styles of commercially successful bands, and added to What About Chad's unique personality and character lends itself to be a sound as unique and diverse as any up and coming band can create.
It is apparent upon seeing and meeting the band what drives this character. The qualities and ideas of the performers in the band could be perceived as anything but recognisable in today's view, all four have studied and worked hard through university times, always dreaming of making a mark on the world. It is recognised by all the members of the band that only hard work and perseverance will make the dream a reality.
